Ranulph?
My wife suggested the name Ranulph as one she really likes. However Ranulph Fiennes is back in the news again reminding me that the name is currently linked to one extremely brave man. We were considering Rafe, Magnus or Henry (Hal) but my wife prefers Ranulph. I don't dislike it, I just have reservations. She thinks that the popularity of names like Rafe/Ralph/Rafferty etc make Ranulph sound almost trendy but more distinctive and that it has lots of easy nicknames like Ran/Rafe/Raffy etc. My father is called Ralph which also means it sort of works as a cognate for his name. We both have a passion for hiking and medieval history so it is somewhat apt in that sense. No personal connection to Ranulph Fiennes though so it does feel possibly a bit of a tribute name given the prominent namesake is the only Ranulph most people will associate with it, I'm just checking it isn't going to be viewed a bit like naming your child Ronaldo because you are a football fan? Will the name overshadow him? There are a few other Ranulphs on wiki but the medieval Earl of Chester is definitely not a household name! Most likely he will grow up to lead a fairly ordinary life and possibly even hate exercise, or on the other hand what if he becomes a polar scientist or enthusiastic climber, either way it could be faintly comical? My wife seems to think the opposite is true, people will assume he is tough as nails and it might help him stand out (should note that my wife and I are over 6ft and I play rugby so he probably won't be ironically petite at least), either way it isn't as neutral as Rafe or Henry or even Magnus. Useable? Or too Fiennes associated?
