Wavering on the baby name I always thought I wanted!

For years now I have felt quite set on Serena as the name I would give my daughter. Now I’m pregnant (due in December) I’m wavering!

For some reason it just doesn’t feel like her. I feel like it’s almost too soft for her, though that has always been one of the things I loved about it :(

I am now really liking Claudia, but DH does not like it. He likes Cleo, which I don’t hate but I feel is too nicknamey to give as her actual name.

Keen on any other ideas - not just Cl- names!! Or any experience from people who’ve gone off a name - I’m kind of hoping I’ll just know when she gets here, but increasingly fearful I won’t.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Yes I’ve never understood what people say about babies not looking like a particular name and ruling out an otherwise perfectly good name solely based on that. Babies look like squashy potato people no matter what they’re called. My kids certainly did 😆

David is a lovely perfectly acceptable name. That I'd loved for years. I still do love it

But once he was in my arms it just didn't feel right he just didn't look like a David or Dave or Davie. He looked like the other name.

DS2 was named before DH got to the hospital "Btw ive said his name's x is that OK?" As they were frantically trying to stem a hemorrhage. I don't think it would have been appropriate to argue.

And now its crossing my mine and I'm far too late to do anything about it why didn't I give DS2 David as a middle name???

Oh I'll just need to get a pet and call it Dave!

Cleo is a real (Greek mythological) name though. It's one of my favourite names.

Or you give it officially as a middle name but still use it as their first name if it suits her when she's here.

Yes, I always think that when people say wait and see what they look like.

It is a wonder nurseries are not over-run by hordes of Maris-Pipers, Marfonas and Yukon-Golds.

Tastes can go a bit skewed in pregnancy.

OneoftheWeddingPeople · 01/10/2026 20:16

Not Sienna. Siennas have big fake eye lashes and beat you up after school.

I love the Welsh name Seren.

ExplodingSmittens · Yesterday 08:15

You could wait until she’s here and then decide? DH absolutely vetoed one of my choices for DD. In the end we had her not agreeing on a name beforehand and when he help her he said “what about x” and it was the name he’d said no to all along. It really does suit her too.

Ooo yes love Seren.

We were between Sophia/sophie and Sienna. When she was born I just didn’t like Sienna for her and I don’t know why, as I now like the name again. She was nameless for a week! My DH wanted Sophie and even though it was in our top 3 I decided it was too plain so I dug my heels in until he gave up.

roshi42 · Today 02:58

Selina?

MarchionessVonSausage · Today 03:09

I prefer Claudette to Claudia and Camille to Camilla.

Am also in Australia and know quite a few Clementines, it had a burst of popularity where I live!
