Opinions on the girl name Alba?

OneBlueKoala · 27/09/2026 16:21

We love Alba for our baby girl.

The only criticism for the name I can imagine, is a likeness to Albert.
However I personally don’t foresee that as an issue.
We love the nickname Allie, as my mother’s name is Alison and she goes by Allie aswell.

Just wanted general opinions to see if there was anything I was missing with the name / any reasons not to use.

Middle name will be Sofia after my grandmother.

other options we still have running are:
Iris
Cassia
Gia
Margot

Not all with middle name Sofia, depending on flow of course.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

I’d assume you’re Scottish, it’s quite popular up here. Nice name.

It was also the name of a short-lived political party in Scotland led by Alex Salmond at the start of this decade that fizzled out in a financial crisis shortly after his death. Salmond had various sexual harrassment claims made against him and the party's politics were a weird mix of social conservatives and nationalist fundamentalists. For that reason it would be a no from me, but this association may be less relevant outside of Scotland.

I vaguely remember it now you mention it, but it certainly wasn’t my first thought. I think most people outside of Scotland really wouldn’t bring it to mind, not least now he’s dead.

Happysnappydays · 29/09/2026 09:26

Alba were also the political party containing ex members of the SNP who stood up to the SNP's harmful self-ID policies, so that's a more positive slant on the association!

It wasn't just Alex Salmond. There was a whole motley crew of candidates who made various off the wall policy pronouncements over the years. They were a broad church and some parts had as much in common with Reform as the SNP. As someone who follows politics in Scotland it will take a while for the association to dissipate.

Yes, nothing says womens rights like a sleazy politician with a succession of sexual harassment charges.

Foolish1984 · 29/09/2026 10:48

I’m sure there’s a cultural connotation/connection to the word Alba. Hence the radio station. If you’re caucasian/white then I wouldn’t. I too am also old enough to remember Alba electronics (still have an alba flat screen tv!) so perhaps that makes me biased!

Viviennemary · 29/09/2026 10:50

Alba is totally dire. Iris is really nice.

Of which he was acquitted. This is a names thread, please don't use it to demonstrate your political prejudices with half-truths.

OP, the name Alba is nice, and has so many different linguistic meanings that I don't there's any one association people will have with it. However I think it's distinct enough that Albert won't cross anyone's mind. Go for it if you love it.

Indeed I do, but they both stood under the same banner along with the idiot who falsely claimed that LGBT organisations were campaigning to reduce the age of consent to 10 years old at a summit of the party's female members. I am not an SNP supporter, but the Alba party lacked any credibility and I have little respect for anyone who associated themselves with it for whatever reason. I am not going to comment any further on the political party, but @NamingNoNames and @HoratioNightboy , I stand by the fact that it is relevant to a thread about the name Alba, because of the very negative connotations it holds for some people in Scotland.

NamingNoNames · 29/09/2026 13:39

@ScotiaLass , negative or not, it does have political connotations. I would avoid Tory too.

Sure but plenty of Scottish people on this thread associate it first with the name of their home country.

bababamama · 30/09/2026 19:02

It’s Gaelic for Scotland, odd as a name

Lulu1919 · 30/09/2026 19:06

I know 4 in the primary I work in

GreggsistentialCrisis · 30/09/2026 19:10

CarbonArtist · 27/09/2026 16:27

It means ‘white’. Not necessarily a reason to avoid it, but something to be aware of.

Oh no! Maybe I should change my surname!

dreamingofgoodhair · 30/09/2026 19:34

Charlotte Crosby has a daughter named Alba if that’s relevant to you?

scotsmumofteens · 30/09/2026 19:36

I like it, I’m Scottish and it means Scotland so it’s loved here xxx

Raiderofthelostbattenburg · 30/09/2026 20:16

I really like it as a name

No more odd than Erin.

watchingthishtread · 28/09/2026 20:51

It will be a nuisance for her if everyone knows her as Allie but all her official documents say Alba. Just call her Allie if that's the name you like.

That's just silly.

People go by all sorts of nicknames and abbreviations.
Bob or Rob or Robbie or Bobby for Robert, Tom for Thomas, Alf for Alfred, etc.
Liz or Bess or Beth or Lizzie or Betty for Elizabeth, Kitty pr Kathy for Katherine, Allie or Alex for Alexandra...

I know no Alexandra who uses their full name, and it causes no confusion or problems whatsoever that their official name isn't the name they use daily.

cartagenagina · 30/09/2026 20:56

To me Alba immediately makes me think of the cheap and crappy hi fi brand.

I definitely wouldn’t call my daughter that, sorry.
