So when are Barbara and Sheila going to come back into fashion?

All the old names from two (or three?) generations ago have come back in, so when are the names from our mums' (or grans', depending on your age) generation going to come back?

What other names come into this category; old enough to be out of fashion, but not old enough to have come back in?

Can you imagine a baby Barbara? I really can't, but it's just prejudice, some people will see the name totally differently no doubt..

Gosh, I really haven't got enough to do today, have I?

Theodosia was a cracking one I came across in my family tree. And Obediah. Very hip in the 1840's...

How does Valerie always end up being on these threads? OK, I know there are a few 60-70-something Vals around (one of the reasons I hate it being shortened) but until MN I always thought it was a sixties-ish sort of a name. I mean, I've never absolutely loved my name, but it's not up there with Doreen - or is it?!

What about Joyce, Vivienne, Lilian? Due for a comeback or what?

shirleyghostman · 05/07/2008 10:08

and Shirley of course!

Just had conversation with DH and we have decided that if another DD comes our way she's going to be Judy. Sorted!

onthepier · 06/07/2008 11:08

There is an Eileen in my dd's class aged 5! Doesn't seem quite right for such a young child.

There is apparently a pattern to old fashioned names coming back in. It's when the naming parent's great-grandparents might have had that name. So Barbara probably has to wait another 10 years or so.

accordiongirl · 06/07/2008 23:00

Ethel
Mildred
Bertha

Due a comeback I say!

serin · 06/07/2008 23:31

I have Spanish friends who have called their baby Barbara, sounds better with a Catalan accent.

I love Vivienne.

frannied · 06/07/2008 23:31

My ex-colleague had a little girl called Barbara. It was 2003 when I started working with her and the girl was about 8yrs old at the time, so she'll be about 13 now. At the time I just couldn't get over the fact she called her that and I never got used to hearing her say it.

elkiedee · 06/07/2008 23:39

I know a Chris(tine) and several Patricias younger than me who are mid 20s-early 30s. I know a few Margarets of my age give or take a few years, though I suspect for anyone born after 1979 and the election of Mrs T as PM, it might depend on political views for a while - it was a name of one of my grandmothers and so is my sister's middle name (but before that date).

MrsJohnCusack · 07/07/2008 02:09

my cousin's 1 year old is called VAlerie

they are inCanada though

alibubbles · 08/07/2008 11:51

EDAM glad to be of help = she has one of the highest pass rates in the country, deff in Herts! Good luck

alysonpeaches · 10/07/2008 12:24

Why didnt Ethel make a comeback? My grandma was an Ethel, born around 1901, amongst her brothers and sisters were:

Hilda, Florrie, Elizabeth, Annie, Clem, Ernest, Hector there might have been a Bennie ... why I cant remember the rest I dont know, there were 11.

Other names in my family from 2 or 3 generations back include:
Phyllis, Leslie, Kathleen, Pauline, May, Martha, Blanche.

I cant imagine using any of these!

pgwithnumber3 · 10/07/2008 19:38

Don't laugh but I know a grandmother called Barbara, her daughters are called Barbara and Anne and the daughter called Barbara has a 7 year DD called Barbara Anne!

My mum is called Shelagh, I can never ever see if coming into fashion again - was it EVER in fashion?

bozza · 10/07/2008 19:46

Barbara Ann is a bit beach boys though.

My DD's middle name is Mary which I think is quite sweet and will be making a comeback before most of these others.

Can I add
Rita
Linda
