Henry - love
Edward (Eddie) - it’s ok
Max - really like
Joshua - love
Joseph (Joe/Joey)
Samuel - it’s ok
Oliver (Ollie) - really like
Oscar (Ozzie) - it’s ok
Thomas - love
Rupert - nice, I like Roo for short
Magnus - not keen
Lawrence (Laurie) - I like Laurie but not really Lawrence

pilates · 13/09/2026 15:20

I like them all except Rupert and Magnus.

HardStopAt4 · 13/09/2026 15:21

George, Max and Oscar are seemingly everywhere right now, if too much popularity bothers you.

Personally I like all of your list except Rupert and Magnus.

HorseandHeron · 13/09/2026 15:28

I like most of them. Good traditional names.

George - cute on younger boy, works on an adult
Henry - better on an adult imo, not a favourite
Edward (Eddie) - like this and that it has so many nn options - Ed, Ted, Ned etc. a real classic.
Max - it's okay - less keen on one-syllable names.
Joshua - really love this - maybe my favourite
Joseph (Joe/Joey) - also like this
Samuel - one of my favourite names - Sam is cute on a smaller child. It is a classic.
Oliver (Ollie) - it's been popular for a long time, but I still like it.
Oscar (Ozzie) - quite a cool, arty name
Thomas - another favourite. And Tom is a lovely nn.
Rupert - not keen on this. It's a bit wet. Also, Murdoch.
Magnus - I like this a lot. Bit less trad than the other names on the list
Lawrence (Laurie) - I like this less than I should. Maybe by association with an ex who turned out to be a creep. But it's a good name, and Laurie is a great nn.

Favourites: Joshua, Samuel, Thomas, Magnus, Oscar

timoteigirl · 13/09/2026 15:32

George - classic so can be boring
Henry - very good, suits any age
Edward (Eddie) - ok
Max - fine but would there be a longer form of the name in birth certificate or no?
Joshua - I find this really too common and boring
Joseph (Joe/Joey) - getting more popular again
Samuel - like this and like Gabriel, Daniel, Mikael and Rafael as well
Oliver (Ollie) - I personally dislike
Oscar (Ozzie) - ditto
Thomas - classic but doubting, means a twin
Rupert - not a fan
Magnus - suddenly popular on mumsnet
Lawrence (Laurie) - I like

others Benedict, Christopher, Julian, David, Martin, Edgar, Mathias, Dominic

DontSingSusan · 13/09/2026 15:38

I personally love Oscar as I have one and I think it's such a cool name. Don't know how popular it is in the UK though as we live abroad.
From your list I also like Max.
How about Arthur, Hugo or Emil(e)?

HugoThatway · 13/09/2026 15:41

George - fine, very popular
Henry - fine, very popular
Edward (Eddie) - both ok. Not keen on Ted and Ned is dreadful
Max - fine
Joshua- fine will be Josh
Joseph (Joe/Joey)- ok.
Samuel - like, will be Sam
Oliver (Ollie) - fine, popular
Thomas - will be Tom. Can't go wrong with it
Magnus - quite like.

Oscar (Ozzie) - not keen
Lawrence (Laurie) - not keen
Rupert - No

I'd pick Tom or Sam.
The names seem quite classic - do you like Michael, Robert or Peter.

Calliopespa · 13/09/2026 16:22

I like Henry, Edward and Samuel best.

Just great classic boy names!

Calliopespa · 13/09/2026 16:23

PS I'm not fond of Magnus. It is just too much Bigness, and makes me think of a Magnum - either the bottle size or the ice-cream!

Rupert is OK, but to me slightly wet. Woopert!

Cocktailsandcheese · 13/09/2026 17:41

pilates · 13/09/2026 15:20

I like Joshua and Samuel from your list

TrojanDonkey · 13/09/2026 21:25

George - so common. I know loads, there are I think 7 George’s in my eldest’s year at school.
Henry - don’t like it particularly, fairly popular
Edward (Eddie) - ok
Max - ok, there are lots of them
Joshua - again there are lots of them, it’s nice
Joseph (Joe/Joey) - I like it
Samuel - love it but again very popular. At one point one of my DC had six Samuel’s in their class!
Oliver (Ollie) - loads of them. Very popular
Oscar (Ozzie) - once again I know bloody loads of Oscars. All known as Oscar G, Oscar P, Oscar S etc to differentiate. Two of my friends have Oscars.
Thomas - it’s fine just a bit boring
Rupert - not a fan
Magnus - unusual compared to the rest of your list
Lawrence (Laurie) - it’s ok

Most of them are just names that you hear all the time at school.
