Thoughts on the name Agatha and nickname Aggie?

Thoughts on the name Agatha, middle name Jean, with a double-barrelled surname?

I really like Agatha, and we’d probably use Aggie as a nickname. I know it’s quite a divisive name, so interested to hear what people think…

One thing I’m unsure about is whether people associate “Aggie/aggy” with “aggressive” or being irritable? I’m not from the UK so I’m not sure if this is actually a thing people would notice?

Would love honest thoughts.

My thought -itsa HIDEOUS name and Aggie is worse

Unless you are giving birth to an old lady, I’d choose a nicer name.

If I saw a child with that name I’d think their parents didn’t really want/like them.

@JayJayj , what names would you suggest?

Autumnbeaches · 08/09/2026 11:44

I think every example being a strong woman ain’t such a bad thing!

It’ll definitely stand out from the frilly frothy tide of Ellies and Evies and lilies and Elsies, which is nice.

A 20something Agatha could be very cool. I love it!

I've never heard 'aggie' to mean 'aggressive'.

I think they'll get a good reception in general as they are rare because fairly old fashioned but not 'made up' or too unusual. Some people will find them ugly, but the same is true of all names. I like Agatha and Jean much more than Agnes and I dislike Jeanette which sounds like the 80s (Jean 50s/60s).

I truly love the name Agatha. Slightly less keen on Aggie, but I still like it. I think I would naturally say ‘Ags’ if a friend of mine had the name.

She didn’t ask for names. She asked for opinions on the name.

NamingNoNames · 08/09/2026 12:48

True but the types of names you like might be completely different to the OP's,, and might explain your strong dislike of the name, @JayJayj .

Just go round pissing everybody off and demand to be called Aggro!

I've only read a selection of the replies but just wanted to say I think some people are way overly dramatic in their responses. I don't think it's a hideous name at all - I doubt that a lot of people would bat an eyelid at hearing it (I certainly wouldn't). I may be wrong in saying this, but I suspect those that dislike it on MN are from a similar age group and their views are not reflective of society as a whole.

Nickname wise I would struggle a bit with Aggie - obviously not an issue though if you like it. I know it has the Rivals connotation, and you may not want that, but I do really like Taggie.

It's a name i would associate with a wealthy aged relative not a child. Agnès- an- yes - French pronunciation. Still risk being pronounced as Agnes i suppose. How about Jeanette as first name. Still dated but better

Edited

I prefer Agatha to Jeanette!

Old ladies were once babies, and names go in cycles. We currently have a Maud, a Mabel, an Ivy, and two Elsies at our nursery, so it’s definitely part of the current cycle of names!
