Love the name Asher, but my surname is Smith. Would you think of the sprinter Dina Asher-Smith...? (And if so, is that a bad thing?)

Needmorelego · 02/09/2026 12:13

I have never heard of that sprinter so I have no idea how well known she is.
I doubt many people would think that unless you are heavily involved with athletics.

Becs258 · 02/09/2026 12:14

I definitely would think of her, but it’s not a bad thing as such.

SilenceInside · 02/09/2026 12:27

Well I would, because I watch athletics. But also that wouldn't be a bad thing at all, it would be a passing thought and I might wonder if you were an athletics fan, but that's about it. Dina Asher-Smith (to date) seems like a nice person and has not had any controversy whatsoever in her career. If you were suggesting Ben Johnson then that might be a different matter!

TrojanDonkey · 02/09/2026 13:21

Nope, wouldn’t occur to me.

WhatHappenedToYourFurnitureCuz · 02/09/2026 13:26

I instantly thought of her when I saw your thread title. But that isn't a bad association. Every name will remind people of others, famous or not.

ItsOnlyMee1 · 02/09/2026 13:27

Yes
But for lols you need to give Dina as the middle name.

LittleGreenShoots · 02/09/2026 13:29

Asher was on my short list- i love the name. I think its great with Smith as you need something a bit less common to balance out a common surname.

Never heard of the Sprinter, but my friend is a Smith and shares his name with a shop, I think you'll hit a lot of namesakes in any direction you go.

moppety · 02/09/2026 13:51

I did instantly think of Dina, I think she’s fairly well known outside of athletics diehards (I don’t have a particular interest but still know her name, Jessica Ennis, Greg Rutherford, etc. just like Colin Jackson, Paula Radcliffe, Liz McColgan and so on)

But I doubt your son’s generation will have her as a household name in the same way and she’s a positive figure so I don’t see much of an issue!

TheOnlyWayIsIlford · 02/09/2026 14:03

I wouldn't think of the sprinter, but anticipating a shortening to Ash (at school etc, even if you prefer to always use full name) Ash Smith is a bit of a lispy sound.

yonem · 02/09/2026 14:09

Never heard of the sprinter but I do know an Asher Smith. I don’t think I could name any sprinters other than Usain Bolt tbh!

HugoThatway · 02/09/2026 14:10

I thought the thread would be about the name Dina/Geraldina.

DillyDallyWally · 02/09/2026 20:14

Thanks everyone, won't rule it out completely yet then!

I know who she is, she's totally aspirational and a great role model so I think you should do it

user1492757084 · 04/09/2026 13:31

Asher is a boys name to me.
And a character in the book - My Name Is Asher Lev.

For a girl I would use Asha or Ayesha.

HugoThatway · 04/09/2026 13:53

@user1492757084, it is a boy's name . Why the mix of names from different religions?
No one was suggesting calling a girl Asher.

AgentPidge · 04/09/2026 14:01

I think it would be OK. Asher is a lovely name.

IThinkThereforeIPaint · 04/09/2026 14:02

No, I wouldn't have that association. And it's a great name.

LittleGreenDuck · 04/09/2026 14:05

I couldn’t work out why the name sounded familiar! Yes, I know of Dina Asher-Smith, but certainly wouldn’t rule out the name because of that.

Zanatdy · 04/09/2026 14:07

I would think of her but nothing bad when think of her.

sanityisamyth · 04/09/2026 14:07

I’ve never heard of the athlete (not my thing!) but it does sound like a surname to me.

BoredZelda · 04/09/2026 19:18

Wouldn’t occur to me and it’s a good, solid name.
