cant decide between these 3 boy names?

Depends on the surname. Arlo and Theodore are very popular, so he'd probably be Arlo/Theo Surname. Hudson is a surname and might sound a bit strange with some surnames.

Theodore isn't a personal favourite of mine, but I find it far preferable to the other two on your list which are both very modern.

Would you shorten it to Theo or Teddy? (If you shorten it at all). I think Theo is absolutely fine as a stand alone name too, if he'll only ever be Theo. Teddy is too nicknamey for me though, so I would stick to Theodore on the birth certificate.

Arlo is a bit dreary to me. And a very different vibe to Hudson.

I quite like Theodore but know a couple of early teen/tween Theo's along with Leo.

All very overused at the moment. Agree that Theodore is preferable to the other two even though I’m not keen on it.

Why would you shorten Theodore to Teddy?

Its a common diminutive, e.g.Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt, former US president is the origin of the term teddy bear.

Because Teddy is a traditional diminutive of Theodore. Teddy bears were named after Theodore Roosevelt.

Hudson is not exactly modern; the name has been around for centuries, but only as a surname.(The Hudson river in New York was named after a 17th century English explorer.) But it is still pretty horrid for a first name.

Hudson is from 'Hugh's son'. It will shorten to Hud.
There are better names. Hugh, for example.

The trend, for using surnames as first names, is a modern one.

It's rare to hear of a Hudson born before the 2010s, in this country at least, therefore it feels very modern.

These days, plenty do seem to use Teddy as a given name, according to the stats, but traditionally most people called Teddy or Ted would have been either Edward or Theodore on their birth certificate.

Theo and Arlo are both fine.

Hudson … I’m normally fairly ‘everyone has different tastes’ but I am hard pushed to think of an uglier name!
