Are any 1930s baby names due a comeback?

After the thread about Joan, I was wondering what people think of some of the other names that were popular in the 1930s. Names are supposed to come around in roughly 100-year cycles, and we’re nearly in the 2030s now! Do you think any of these 1930s names are ready for a comeback yet? And are there any others you’d suggest?

Really love the name Joy too

Enid has been comparatively popular for donkey’ years. The rest — it’s too soon. The people naming their babies need to have no living memory of grandparents, elderly neighbours called Bernard and Marjorie.

I've recently met Richard, Peter, Bernard, Rita, Sylvia and Margot at toddler groups.

Doris and Cecil.

I think Daphne, Enid, Eric and Leonard. I have already come across a few.

Also met: Dorothy, Ernest, Sidney, Hazel, Stella, Maggie, Esther, Audrey, Lawrence, Jeanie, Sylvie, Pearl.

Sheila and June are names for women in their 60s or 70s for me so not 1930s names. Not yet due for a come back.

I can't see Doris making a comeback, or Hilda.

Sylvia is back in Sylvie form.

dd was going to be daphne before DH vetoed!

Sylvia is a beautiful, literary name. Mary and Margaret are classic, not just from the 1930s. And I've seen June, Jean, Hilda and Peggy all considered in this baby name board. So never say never!

Actually Marjorie has a very pretty sound, if you can get over the 'old person' associations. It was also popular in the middle ages I think.

Pamela and Patricia too (although you haven't mentioned them). Pretty names actually.

I think Peggy is going to make the comeback

I have a Laurence/ Laurie and he definitely wasn’t born in the 1930s ,I know similar aged Sylvie,Tim ,Peter and Hazel.

I know a 6 year old called Hilda Clara. Her sister is Edith Rose.

From the boy's names - love Peter and of course it's a classic name, from the Bible etc. I'm sure it's on the edge of a revival.

Daphne and Margaret already seem to be back?
Ethel is one, though thanks to the Worst Witch, that might be delayed!

Even my grandmother, in her late nineties, hated the name Doris with a passion (her own name, as it happened). I am only in my 30s, but all these turn of the century -1930s names coming back does confuse me, as I know or remember plenty of old people with these names and simply cannot get past them for a baby. Joan, Wally, Eve, John, Alan, Hazel, Harry, Sylvia, Frieda, Marjorie, Stan, Bert, Rosemary, Doris, Phil, Doreen ... all grandparents and great aunts and uncles I know/knew well.

My mum was born 1931 and was named Patricia. Her sisters were Pauline, Pearl and Pamela. I think all the names are pretty. My dad was named Dennis which I also think is nice.

I knew an old lady from this era whose name was Senga. She was christened Agnes but hated it so reversed her name from an early age.

I'm hoping that Beryl may be revived. The name is made of two pleasant sounds and it's a beautiful stone.

That’s interesting as I have met a Senga before (more like in her 70s)

I had a granny who must have been born around 1917. Her name was Daisy. She said that when she went to her first job the other workers told her that they couldn’t call her that silly name so she became “Sally”.

They are both perfectly lovely names.

I have an Enid. I’d say Daphne, Margaret, June, Joan, Joy, Freda, and Gloria are either back or have the potential to be, ie I’ve seen them all mentioned numerous times on these boards as shortlisted options. I also think Marjorie will be back, helped by the Taylor Swift connection.

For boys, same story with Walter, Lawrence, Eric.

Here in Canada I have come across a Marjorie and a Rita lately, both toddlers!
