After months and thanks to a little help we had finally decided on a name with middle name Emilia. However my nephew was recently born and has as middle name Emiel. So now both middle names are almost identical. Is this an issue? Would you change the middle name?

Complete non issue. Emma's a very nice name.

modgepodge · 08/08/2026 12:49

No one really uses their middle names so this is a complete non issue. One of my siblings has a middle name that is actually our cousins first name! Spelt differently but exactly the same pronunciation. Never been an issue. Use the middle name you like.

You're going to get 935 posts telling you it's a non-issue. They're right.
I don't even know my nieces' middle names.

AustenitesUnite · 08/08/2026 12:50

Not an issue at all. After the birth announcement, middle names rarely get used. Most of the children in my family have the same middle names as they are family names used for many generations

It’s so fine. Don’t over think.

If it was first name you would have a point but a middle name its irrelevant nobody uses it. My kids don't even have middle names as they're just not used and pointless

Do you know your cousins’ middle names? I know some but not all. They never come up except at weddings.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 08/08/2026 21:08

My daughter’s middle name sounds very similar to the middle name of my cousin’s child. I don’t think anyone else has even noticed. It’s definitely never come up. If it were their first names and they were likely to be seeing each other a lot I can see how it might get confusing, but I don’t think similar middle names matter at all.

Depends. I don't have one because my parents thought they were pointless and I had a fabulous surname. Now I'm married with an ordinary first name and boring surname - the same as someone else at my previous work. I had to 'adopt' a middle name so we didn't have the same work emails!

DaisyChain505 · Yesterday 19:07

Not really relevant, It’s a middle name. How often do you use yours?

ToadRage · Yesterday 19:42

I don't think you need to change the name but use the prettier spelling Amelia and it will appear different enough.
Unlike most people here i am very fond of my middle names and use them whenever possible.

User6761 · Yesterday 19:58

Non issue. My child and a cousin have the same middle name. It's not a family name or anything, just a coincidence both families chose it.

Fwiw, unlike a pp, I think Emilia is much nicer than Amelia.

BebbanburgIsMine · Yesterday 21:27

We are a family who all use our middle names (going back generations!) but I think it’s fine to use Emilia, even if your nephew has a similar name.

My mother uses her middle name as she hates her given first name.
