hi everyone first time posting so be nice 😅

im due in a few weeks and me and my partner have pretty much settled on a baby girls name but now im panicking that it doesnt actually sound that nice anymore

everyone i ask says something different my mum likes it my sister pulled a face and my mate said its a name she'll have to grow into which has really got in my head she might not like it when shes older

i dont really want to put the name on here just yet because if someone i know reads on here they'll know its me but would you say if youre having doubts this close to the baby coming its a sign to change it or am i just overthinking it

ive changed my mind about loads of things this pregnancy already and dont want to be one of them mums that regrets the name after shes born

what would you do

This is an issue with sharing a name before a baby is born. Once the baby is born and named everyone is so exited about the baby and the name is fixed and so even if it isn't people's taste they will keep quiet.

You will never find a name that everyone likes. The Baby name threads on MN demonstrate that.

As long as they haven't pointed out something that you hadn't noticed, that the initials spell something rude or a common shortening sounds ridiculous with your surname or something, if you love the name, go with it!

I don’t think having doubts on its own is a sign to change it, nor is a negative reaction from one or two people

But putting all those things together I think you need to ask yourself have you chosen something a bit odd. No child really enjoys having a super unusual name IME, that’s usually the parents wanting to be unique. A bit unusual but normal name, fine, off the wall no.

If you’ve chosen a perfectly normal name then set your mind at rest and stop telling people!

Of course MN will want to know the name 😆

PoesieAndPeaches · 04/08/2026 13:56

You have to ask yourself very honestly if your child is likely to actually like her own name for her whole life. If in doubt, pick a different name.

Silverbirchleaf · 04/08/2026 13:57

Use the name you love. If other people don’t like it, that’s their problem. The only people that matter are you and your dp.

mathanxiety · 04/08/2026 14:03

You need to grow a thicker skin.
You also need to develop the habit of keeping a lot of your thoughts private.

This is because everyone and their uncle Barney will think it's their right and duty to make you do things their way with the baby once she's born. If you show any sign of needing validation or openness to criticism, these people will pile in. They have already started.

The baby is not going to be named by a committee. Yours and your partner's opinion of the name are the only opinions that matter.

… and the future child

If you love the name, keep it.

We kept our daughters name a secret but I did tell my best friend and she replied saying it sounded "hippy" which stung slightly but ultimately chose to ignore.

My MIL came across the name when some family members were discussing name options for the baby and loudly told everyone "ugh thats an awful name, imagine shouting that out in the park!" Im sure she would've been more tactful if she had known that was actually the name we picked.

Anyway, baby is now a year old and I ADORE her name, she suits it so much and no one has said anything negative to our faces since she was born

NURSET · 04/08/2026 14:18

Other than what your MIL said being impolite and tactless, who is shouting their child's name out in the park anyway?? I live in Australia, so maybe it is different here.

MagicMarkers · 04/08/2026 14:23

We had one of these threads once and everyone said "use the name you like" until the god awful name was revealed and everyone said "don't do that to your child".

We don't know if it's a nice name or not.

I don't think the poor MIL has said anything!

Seems like they don't even have to be mentioned to get a bashing on MN!😂

I'm afraid this is true Op: we can't really know.

Is it Balonz?

Pistachiocake · 04/08/2026 21:12

Change if you're already unhappy. Sometimes people like weird names in pregnancy, don't know if it's hormones, and really regret it. But as you're already unsure, no point using it.

It was the poster Sesame2011 at 14:10 who stated their MIL had complained about a name but that was before she knew it was to be her grandchild's name.

Billbob12 · 04/08/2026 21:20

I definitely liked a couple of names during my pregnancy that are ridiculous now I'm not pregnant. Honestly made up names I thought had a nice sound to them but in all honesty were terrible.
That said I chose my DDs name which is unisex and everyone thought it was a bit odd, she's much older now and I still love her name, no regrets and couldn't imagine her as anyone else.

So probably not much help, but if they are names you'd find on a baby list your probably okay.

DaysIllRememberAllMyLife · 04/08/2026 21:22

Would you like to be called the name?

If so, go ahead.

My friend wanted to call her daughter Bunny. Someone asked her if she'd like to be going through life called Bunny and she admitted that she wouldn't and chose another name.

INeedaDietcoke · 06/08/2026 15:43

Names are so subjective, there are loads of 'normal' names that I absolutely hate. Doesn't mean they are not good names.

Do the opinions of other people matter to you? Lots of people want their friends and family to love the choice, other people don't care.

Without knowing the name we can't tell you if it's an objectively bad name like Chlamydia or just down to personal taste. But someone else not loving your chosen name shouldn't be the deciding factor in whether you use it or not.

It's common but doesn't make it any less annoying. I wish people would simply walk closer to where their child is and tell them that it's time to leave or anything else that they may need to say (which is what I've always done). The absolute worst is when a child is being naughty in public (especially on holiday) and the parent keeps shouting their name as loudly as possible repeatedly when that's clearly not working.
