Should I change my baby's name?

My daughter's name is Annabel. She was born in June, and everyone (except grandparents) is still spelling her name incorrectly. As an example, I'll receive messages asking if they may come round to see 'Annabelle'. I've gently and subtly corrected before, but it's almost as if they forget and then can't remember which spelling it is (because there are so many variants). It is mostly insignificant how her name is spelt in a message to me, but it really bothers me when someone's name is misspelt. It's a pet peeve of mine. My husband has suggested changing her name. I love the name and do not want to change it to an entirely different name but feel like I have no choice if I ever want to see her name written properly. I just think about how this will become a bigger issue once she's at school and meeting loads of different people.

Keep the name. If her name is misspelt, send a message saying 'Hi Lousie, Thanks for the message. DD's name is Annabel. '

SJM1988 · 04/08/2026 13:45

Honesty you will get the issue with alot of names so I wouldn't change it for that reason. Just keep correcting. Everyone who matters will get it soon.

EssexEst · 04/08/2026 14:00

It won't get any better if you keep the name Annabel. I have a name that has two common spellings. As a child and teen, I received birthday cards and gifts from aunts and uncles with my name misspelt on them. My mum and dad reminded people, but they just never quite got it. It was upsetting to me as a child.

seagullsandbeachhuts · 04/08/2026 14:04

How about keeping Annabel on the birth certificate, but using Anna or Belle/Bella day to day. Less scope for misspellings!

SlenderRations · 04/08/2026 14:14

Because she likes the name Annabel and would have called her Anna is she wanted her called that ?

Morethanadecade · 04/08/2026 14:17

How weird of people. Annabel is the standard U.K. spelling, so it’s odd that people are randomly spelling it the French way. Do they pronounce it the French way too?

Needmorelego · 04/08/2026 14:29

I like your spelling better. Don't change it.
Both me and my sister have names that have alternative spellings so frequently have had it spelled wrong.
You learn to ignore it.

CatsAreBetterThanPeeps · 04/08/2026 14:31

I have a name that has 2 usual spellings and I have always accepted either version without comment, it’s probably 70/30 that they get it right as mine is the more popular spelling. It has never bothered me from my earliest memory to now. I don’t recall my parents ever correcting anyone but they may have done.

I gave my own DD a name with 2 mainstream spellings, her way is the more unusual of the 2 and people get it wrong more often than not at 70/30. Again, it makes zero matter to me, and she’s not fussed either. Even very close family & friends get it wrong. I always use the correct version when I message using her name but I’ve never corrected anyone iyswim. I don’t think it matters. Which is a long winded way of saying does it really matter to you that her name is misspelled if you love the name?

wizzler · 04/08/2026 15:07

I like your spelling best . Just persevere. My name is only 3 letters long and people still spell it incorrectly

Moreholidaysthanjudithchalmers · 04/08/2026 15:19

Persevere. A colleague as called that and no one had any issues. It’s the normal spelling.

ChuisEpuisee · 04/08/2026 15:21

Annabel is a completely normal UK spelling - how strange. I think stick it out.

ImthatBoleyngirl · 04/08/2026 15:22

DD14's name ends with a y but can also end with an ie. It's amazing how many people who've known us for years still get it wrong! 🤣 I love the name though so there was no chance I'd change it.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 04/08/2026 15:35

DD has a name with quite a few variations on the spelling. It has never been an issue.
As a baby she went by a common shortened version with an ie ending. DMIL decided on day one that it had a y ending and spread this amongst her family and friends. This meant despite me sending cards and thank you cards with the correct spelling every year without fail she had birthday cards and cheques with the wrong spelling. MIL was not a problem once we had put her right she always got the correct spelling, if she hadn’t that would have really grated my nerves.

Keep the name and the spelling OP and correct those that should no better

Mt563 · 04/08/2026 15:39

I must admit I can never quite hold the correct spelling for these type of names in my head. But I check past messages everytime to make sure i get it right.

Don't change her name though. This could happen with a lot of names. It's just one of those things.

It's a lovely name!

Don't change it! Educate them on the correct spelling.

Sashya · 04/08/2026 15:41

OP - just be happy with your baby and enjoy the babyhood. People in your life will eventually get used to the spelling you chose.

And those who'll be misspelling - who cares.
You will also let go of things that are insignificant - like that issue, that is a non-issue.
You'll have so many more things to deal with as the baby grows up - the spelling of the name is not really going to matter.

FlorenceLawrence · 04/08/2026 15:44

Keep Annabel - it's a really pretty name and spelling.
I have a name with 2 common spellings - everyone seems to spell it the wrong way. But then I meet someone with it spelt the other way, they say exactly the same! So you can't win.

Bakeittillyoumakeit · 04/08/2026 15:45

I still at 50 get mixed up with the Clare's and Claire's in my life.

If it's really going to bother you'd then I'd change her name. Maybe just shorten it to Anna.

vincettenoir · 04/08/2026 15:46

I wouldn’t be considering this if you have already registered her name. If your dd is two days old and the misspelling is bothering you this much, then maybe.

ShetlandishMum · 04/08/2026 15:47

Annabel is fine.
If they won't step up and spell her name right just ignore them.

IdaGlossop · 04/08/2026 15:55

You love the name. Keep it. The mis-spelling will get less annoying over time.

My DD's name often got changed to the male version. It bothered me for a while but once I realised it didn't really matter I stopped being annoyed.

Moveoverdarlin · 04/08/2026 16:13

I know three Annabels. All have a different spelling. Took me a while to learn which one was which. One is my Mum, so when I became good friends with a colleague called Annabel I had to force myself to spell it differently.

Definitely don’t change the name.

OneWildSloth · 04/08/2026 16:18

Don’t change the spelling. My daughter’s name is spelt in an uncommon way and she often has to correct people. But, the people who matter most will get it right. That’s what counts.

Aluna · 04/08/2026 18:10

I certainly wouldn’t change a very standard name because some people are too stupid to spell it correctly.

CatherinedeBourgh · 04/08/2026 18:12

I can guarantee that if you change it to Annabelle you will start noticing the 50% of people who will spell it Annabel....
