How do you feel about the name Sara?

I know it's a classic and fairly common name, but I always found it soft, airy and pretty in an understated way. Worried it might be too plain though. Honest opinions welcome!

On the spelling: it's traditionally spelled this way in my family and pronounced "saah-ruh" (like Zara with an S), though I wouldn't particularly mind if people said "sair-uh" either..

I know someone with this name, and she is constantly being called 'ser-ah' (Sarah pronounciation) rather than 'saar-a' as in Zara, which she hates. So something to consider as people will likely mix it up

I prefer Sarah personally, it just has a nicer sound.

I think it’s slightly dull, but not common amongst current little girls!

I know one who pronounces it as you want, to rhyme with Zara, but another who pronounces it as Sarah. I think she’s of Welsh decent, not sure if that’s the Welsh spelling/pronunciation?

The two Saras I know pronounce it as Sarah.

I think it's nice with either pronunciation. A classic name but probably not one I'd personally choose.

The Arabic pronunciation is the one you've mentioned. I really like Sara with that pronunciation. For British accents I prefer Sarah, though.

It's one where I always ask how they'd pronounce it as like PP's I know Saras who sound like Sarah and Zara. Doesn't stop it being lovely though.

I know a yoga teacher and a reflexologist who both changed from Sarah to Sara - Sara being in keeping with the persona they wanted to project…

I know Saras who pronounce it both ways, which can make it hard to remember which is which sometimes. I always think of it as rhyming with Zara.

I have a friend who says you’re not Sarah (sair-ruh) unless you have the h. Otherwise you’re Sah-ra. By that logic, Sara Cox pronounces her own name wrong.

If you want Sair-ruh, just add the h - save your child from constant mispronunciation and correction.

Well if they’re pronouncing it Sair-ah then they’re wrong! That’s Sarah.

I love Sarah. It's beautiful, classic, relevant and cool. I have not come across Sara, pronounced to rhyme with Zara, before. I don't like it as much but still like it.

Sara Cox is actually Sarah. She said someone spelt her name wrongly and it stuck professionally or something like that.

Quite a few people I've known over the years, in in my age group (born 80s), have this name. There are lots of Sarahs, some Saras pronounced Sarah, and a few Saras pronounced Saar-uh. None in my kids' classes, so if you don't want her to have the same name as anyone else, likely to be a good choice. Obviously can't guarantee it though-you never know another pregnant woman who lives in your are might be reading this and copy you too!

It isn't a weird or wacky name.

I just feel it got really overused when I was young and, although it has been out of fashion for a few decades now, I feel as though it has not yet really reached the point of being ready for a revival. Sort of a bit tired maybe, having become both overused and a bit ordinary. I just think it needs a bit longer before it will feel fresh again.

It is ok as a name, but I think there are much lovelier names.

Much better than Sarah, however I agree with PP it’s a bit plain Jane vibes.

If you like in the UK I feel you are condemning your child to a lifetime of saying “without the H”.
I would use Sarah or Zara, both are lovely.
