Would this stop you from using a name?

If you loved a certain name, would knowing multiple people that you dislike or just don't get on with who are called that same name make you decide not to use the name?

Probably

Namiemcnameface · Today 09:54

Yes. But I wish it wouldn't tbh, feels like everyone should start with a clean slate and not have me making negative associations due to their name. But in reality both DH and I vetoed several names for that exact reason..

Maddy70 · Today 09:55

Yes

DisplayPurposesOnly · Today 10:02

But if knowing those people put me off that name, then I already dont like the name so I wouldnt use it.

If I like the name, then get to know those people, then still like the name... then I like the name and use it regardless.

No, names do not determine personality (in my opinion). It feels a bit superstitious to think otherwise. Why would I assume that my child is going to have a particular personality (bad or good) if I give them a certain name? Making that assumption seems risky.

If I like a name, it doesn't matter who else has it. My child will become the embodiment of that name.

CloudyWithAChanceOfCustard · Today 10:47

It would put me off totally.

Dontcallmescarface · Today 10:48

No, because my child isn't them.

Rinceyourrice · Today 10:50

Yes, it would put me off.

My most hated person is Julie. I could never call my child Julie.

Likeiloveyou · Today 11:18

Yes

Helenbelena · Today 15:34

Yes! Lots of names that are tainted by bad/terrible people. It would definitely put me off.

Helenbelena · Today 15:37

Not many people would want to call their child Adolf, Huw or Myra?

Topseyt123 · Today 15:42

It might depend a bit on who some of the people are that it could be associated with. If it was the name of some disgraced public figure or infamous criminal then I would avoid it.

However, if it was just someone I didn't like at school then it probably wouldn't put me off and I might use it. My child would be their own person, not that one.

Yes. Lucys I have met, I'm looking at you
