Struggling to find a name DH and I both like. We have a shortlist of names and would love thoughts or suggestions of similar names.

Some aren't so popular these days but I can't decide if they're still classic or just dated 😅

Flora
Gwendolen nn Gwen
Sarah
Jemima
Mary
Katherine nn Katie

Lovely. I love Gwen.

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 28/07/2026 16:45

Lovely list - I love Jemima

only name I think is a bid dated is Sarah

Mariets · 28/07/2026 16:46

Katie for a little girl is fine but not for an adult.

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/07/2026 16:46

I love Gwen and Mary. I would have loved a Mary but as I already had a Joseph it was out.

ItalianChineseIndianMexican · 28/07/2026 16:47

I like Flora.

YouBelongWithMe · 28/07/2026 16:49

I love them all, bar Sarah which ai think is a bit bland/dated.

Mumofgirls2017 · 28/07/2026 17:12

Sarah, Mary and Katherine are classic as you say, though would currently be seen as a bit dated. However will probably come back around in future!

I love Jemima and flora.

not sure what I think of Gwendolyn. It’s quite cool, but just not to my taste.

whatwouldlilacerullodo · 28/07/2026 17:17

Love Flora and Gwen

Advocodo · 28/07/2026 17:18

My favourite from that list is Mary. Lovely classic name due a comeback.

Visiblyabove25 · 28/07/2026 17:20

Personally, I would say Sarah is dated rather than classic.

I think the others are lovely, I especially like Flora and Jemima and I absolutely love Gwen.

Excellentsausages · 28/07/2026 17:48

Flora is my favourite.

Sarah is dated although a nice name.
I think Katie is a very 90s/00s shortening of Katherine- I think Kit/Kitty would be more modern.

Norastroud · 28/07/2026 22:02

I love Flora & Jemima (Mima or Jem are really cute nicknames)
Gwen feels very Welsh to me, I like it but would assume you had Welsh heritage.
Sarah, Katherine & Mary are all lovely classics, but as other posts have said feel more dated.
goodluck!

I heard of a newborn called Gwen(doline) only this week. We have a Constance

PauliesWalnuts · 28/07/2026 22:06

I really like them all apart from Gwendolyn - I think I had a child’s book where the bully was a Gwendolyn. A neighbour has just had a Mary Elizabeth which I love, and names like Sarah, Martha, Rebecca are biblical and never really go out of style.

Giraffehaver · 28/07/2026 22:11

What a fab list. I have a baby Jemima so obviously I love that best. Gwendolen is lovely too

CurlewKate · 28/07/2026 22:19

I really don’t understand the “dated” thing. I suppose there are some names that have a brief flurry of popularity then sink without trace, but most classic names just carry on. They are classic for a reason.

NamingNoNames · 28/07/2026 23:25

@CurlewKate , I really don’t understand the “dated” thing.
It's when a name is linked to an age group that is much older.
For example, if you heard the name Darren you would probably not expect him to be a child.
If you would not think of Darren being middle-aged then I don't think the concept is for you.

Echointhedarkness · 28/07/2026 23:35

I like them all.

How about Alexandra, Abigail, Emily, Julia, Rosalind

Firebird83 · 29/07/2026 00:02

They’re all lovely! Sarah or Mary would be refreshing on a baby or toddler.

JugBouquet · 29/07/2026 00:04

Gwen is best.

BeeBeeHive · 29/07/2026 00:07

Katherine
Mary
Sarah
These are all classics and work. They are much nicer and stronger names than the others.

Flora
Gwendolen
Jemima

These are all pretty wet. I wouldn't want to be called any of these as an adult. They all would be ok as middle names.

SummerSummerSummertime · 29/07/2026 04:27

LOVE Flora, Sarah and Gwen.

CurlewKate · 29/07/2026 05:57

I love Mary! Katherine’s lovely too, but I would go Kate not Katie. My daughter-out-law is Jemima, usually Jem, which I also love. And so does she, if that helps!

Daffodilsinthespring · 29/07/2026 06:58

Lovely names and certainly not dated.

Betadelta · 29/07/2026 07:02

I like all these except Sarah. My favourites are Gwen, Jemima and Katie - I'd probably choose Katie.
