Is spelling a concern with this name?

How do you feel about the name Emmett for a boy? DH's mum keeps writing it as Emmet, and my dad has misspelt it as Emmitt. They cannot seem to remember that it's Emmett. I really did not think that spelling would be a concern with this name. Do you think it will be misspelt frequently? Is it just our parents?

Emmett is the best and usual spelling. Emmet looks incomplete. Emmitt just looks like a typo.

It feels rather American (in usage).

'Emmet' is an archaic word for 'ant', the insect. From Old English.

I think that people would spell it with various combinations of 'm' and 't'.

Emmet (double m one t) was the master builder main character in the Lego movie, that’s how I’d spell it.

It sounds like a surname to me.

It’s daft to say “oh, they’ll get used to it.” Of course they will. But 50% of the people he meets for the rest of his life will also “have to get used to it”. Which will be deeply tedious for him. I’ve never heard Emmitt as a spelling. But Emmet and Emmett are common alternatives.

Yep, it's Cornish for ant. That's why the tourists swarming everywhere are called emmets.

One of my daughter's has the name Claire as part of her name. People spell it all different ways but I tell them 'it's Claire, with everything in', which stops the Clare, Clair spellers. You could try the same with your Emmett.

I do some supply teaching and I’ve come across a few boys called Emmett. Not loads, it’s not Noah but as many Emmetts as Johns.

Yes, it's annoying but not massively. I have a name that has endless spelling variations, so you get into the habit of saying (e.g.) 'That's Katharine with a K and it's arine not erine."

What is annoying is th enumber of people who misspell it when they put in your email address and then can't find your theatre/airline tickets, or you never get signed up for the one email newsletter you actually want to receive.

I'd bear that sort of thing in mind when naming a child.

Emmet is an ant in Cornwall. Also emmets is pejorative term for the hordes of summer visitors (like grockle in Devon).

So Emmett as in Doc Emmett in the Back to the Future films?

I think it looks nicer with double m and double t. I probably wouldn't use it as I live too close to Cornwall but I do like it.

Had this issue with my son's name. His name is Aaron (now 15) and to this day, all of his grandparents have never been consistent in how they spell it. Not just them too, it's been a lot of people throughout his life...we've had Aron, Arran, Aarron, Arron....The worst was on his first day of primary school and when we went into the class, the teacher had made up name cards for each desk and his was the only one with the incorrect spelling. He was so upset :( can be very frustrating, especially if it's family members and you've told them how it's to be spelled.

Yes, I think so too - and often claimed to be derived from the word for ants, reflecting the way ants come rushing in in droves like tourists, though I think that gets debated (maybe so they can get away with still using it!😂)

I know one Emmett, quite elderly, and he isn't what you'd call a charmer.

Emmitt as a spelling is awful.

Too close to emit, which makes me think of farts and vomit.

And yet it’s a name that’s over 700 years old and comes from the word ‘universal’ in Old German.
