What do you think of the name Hugh?

Lots of Hughs in my family. It’s difficult for little children to pronounce, but they aren’t little for long.

There was one at my primary school. We didn't struggle but some called him Hughie.

I really like it (as long as your surname doesn’t start with a J sound).

I like it. We have three in our extended family.

Love it.
As a PP said as long as you don't have a j/g sounding surname (Hugh Jarse etc)

I like it - and much prefer Hugh to Hugo, which seems to have become extremely popular in the last few years.

It reminds me of a schoolfriend called Hugh (back in the 1970s) and Hugh Grant.

Rather less positively it also reminds me of Hugh Hefner and the lecherous Hugh Bodrugan in Poldark!

I like it, but not that spelling. My Dad is Huw (spelt the Welsh way), and while my man himself is a dickhead, the name itself always makes me feel warm and cosy because it reminds me of older relatives saying it in a warm thick Welsh accent. It feels like home somehow.

My dad is Hugh but Aodh to his childhood family. This would be Donegal/Ulster. His Aodh is pronounced as the letter E.

His father was a native Irish speaker and was always known as Hughie.

Yes. I remember watching some documentary featuring West Kerry fishermen. They were mostly older men who spoke Irish as a first language, though at the other end of the country to your family obviously.
There seemed to be a disproportionate number of Hughies.

There are Hughs and Hughies in my family too and before that there were Aodhs.

Hugh, along with Duncan, are the worst most dull names ever. Sorry.

I dunno I just think it's a name that would be difficult to pronounce for some people 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ perhaps I'm being deluded.

I like Hugo more.

I know a lovely Huw, the first one I ever met so I’m partial to the Welsh spelling.

One of my son’s best friends is a Hugh, lovely name.

I like it.

For a long time I preferred Hugo but that seems to be getting a bit overused atm. Hugh feels a bit more classic.

Also Hugo is staring to be a dog name.

Very handsome and Hugh has an attractive meaning - strong of mind, bright.

I have a 10 yo Hugh . Irish heritage, named for late FIL. Biased, but love it, obviously- bit less used than Hugo but we have come across a couple of others when we lived in UK.

It is difficult for little kids in England to pronounce but they do grow out of it. It's often misheard as well.

In France where we live now, it's pronounced "oug" (hard G) which I kinda love with the French accent.

I prefer Hugo (my cat is called Hugo).

Love it - my eldest son is Hugh. In fact, it was a suggestion on here when o was pregnant with him! He’s 9 now and I still love it.

I do also like Hugo, but it’s very popular now if that bothers you. We’ve only met one other child Hugh in his 9 years.

It is true though that it’s hard for small children to say though. He had a few variations when younger - Huge, Cube, Who 😂

It’s my son’s middle name, as my maiden name was Hughes.

Where I grew up (not where I live now) people said Hughes as Use so Hugh would be You. But that is a very strong accent and crucified any name beginning with H. I like Hugh!
