Hannah + Annie - too similar?

As per title - my name is Hannah and our favourite girls name is Annie. Are these too similar?! 😔 my name is never shortened by anyone if makes difference. I love Annie with our surname, and with DH name in the middle if saying all our names as a family, but worry it’s too similar and people will think I’ve named after myself 😂😂

For siblings, too similar for sure.

For mother and daughter, absolutely fine.

My own name has a similar sound to that of one of my boys, but I don't think anyone has ever even noticed. It's never been remarked on, anyway.

Agree with @DramaAlpaca, for siblings it would be a mouthful as you would be using the names together all the time, but for mother and daughter it would be absolutely fine because you’ll rarely be referred to together.
You won’t be ‘Hannah’ much for the next few years anyway, just “mummy, mum, muuuuuuuuuuummmm!” Or “Annie’s mum” or “ask your mum” 😂

I cannot speak as an Anna who called her daughter Annabel. In hindsight it was stupid and I don't actually know why no-one intervened and pointed out the ridiculousness.

However yours are not similar enough to pose any issue as mother/daughter.

I have a similar name to my DM and it's never been a problem. I really like that she loved her own name and chose something similar whilst giving me my own identity. Having different initials is helpful too

I love both Hannah & Annie

Congratulations!

I think it's fine. We know a Ben with a daughter called Wren, a Jen who has a baby Ben and a Kate with a teenage Nate. My parents had rhyming names and I always kinda loved it ❤️

Hannah and Annie don't sound similar at all in comparison!! Annie is a lovely name. Congratulations ❤️

PivotPivotmakingmargaritas · 09/07/2026 12:46

I was thinking siblings too and yes that would be a mouthful but no mother and daughter fine.

Most people when around your daughter will refer to you as Mummy/Mumma/Mum as in go see mum to put on your shoes etc

So it’s fine

Pemba · 09/07/2026 16:49

Of course Hannah and Annie are different forms of the same name really, but for mother and daughter it's fine as pps have said.

Ineffable23 · 09/07/2026 16:51

Fine for mum and daughter. Annoying for siblings.

Thank you all for thoughts, much appreciated!!! And for congratulations too 🥰

I think it’s fine. Annie is lovely. I know a Charlotte who has a Charlie and nobody thinks anything of it.

wishfulthinking25 · 09/07/2026 21:20

My name is the traditional nickname of my mum’s. I’ve actually never thought about it until this thread. Not a problem at all! Also love the name Annie :)

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 09/07/2026 21:31

No issues at all and it’s a lovely name

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 09/07/2026 21:39

I also agree for mother and daughter it’s fine.

Giraffehaver · 09/07/2026 22:10

@DramaAlpacahas it spot on as usual

Besidemyselfwithworry · 09/07/2026 22:17

I know a Nigel who called his daughter Nigella like the famous chef and a Lee who’s daughter is called Leonie

I’d say go with what you like don’t worry about others - Annie is a lovely name.

Congratulations on your pregnancy.
