Baby girl name help?

Pinkfairy00 · 02/07/2026 11:32

Found out we’re having a baby girl but really struggling with names! I love Madeleine but we’ve decided against it as everyone we mention it to brings up the mcanns 🙃
we can’t agree on a single name! Husband likes Hailey. We both like maya but not enough for a first name, I want a name that’s not too popular, but also not made up? Not a fan of old names, any suggestions please ?

Why are you telling people the name? Madeleine is lovely, and although it is linked with one person, there are others like Madeleine Albright and Madeleine Wickham, both inspirational, strong women.

Hailey's not my taste and Maya's been overused.

Madison's a bit too American for me. It's a surname.

Madeleine is lovely. Used by a lot of people. Madison is not the same vibe at all.

I'd say Genevieve, Adelaide, Marianne, Penelope are a similar vibe.

Dreamerinme · 02/07/2026 17:46

Madeline is lovely. Ignore those linking it to the McCann case - if we did that with every name that has been in the media/courts there would be a long list of names to avoid.

Anyway, don’t tell people your chosen names until after baby is here as all you’ll get is a monologue of negative connotations and opinions like you’ve already had. You’re excited and want to share your thoughts on names but you have to be prepared for people’s responses if you do this (although few will say anything once baby is born!).

What about Adeline- similar to Madeleine but without the connotation

Madeleine is such a beautiful name. It's been several years since the Madeleine McCann tragedy, is nobody ever to use the name again?

That would be a pity.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 02/07/2026 20:24

Matilda, Mirella, Maeve?

Lovephil · 02/07/2026 20:31

I like Madeleine. You can’t avoid every name that’s been in the news. But if you really don’t want it, how about Miranda or Imogen?

AgentPidge · 02/07/2026 20:38

Miranda and Melissa are both lovely.

Giraffehaver · 02/07/2026 22:43

I love Hailey but DH found it too old fashioned. Fenna?

PenandPip · 02/07/2026 23:28

To me Madeline and Hailey are not of the same genre. Hailey is very 90s. Madeline was not a popular name until Madeline McCann.

It's hard to suggest names when the two you like are so different.

NamingNoNames · 02/07/2026 23:36

@PenandPip , Madeline was not a popular name until Madeline McCann. She was Madeleine and it was popular before she was born (2003)
Baby name explorer
She disappeared in 2007.

Maybe so but I never heard of anyone, let alone a 3 year old called Madeleine. Still haven't heard the name in my community or social circles. I personally wouldn't use the name.

NamingNoNames · 02/07/2026 23:56

You posted something that wasn't true. I could say Leo is really rare because I only know 3 and the youngest of them is 18.

We know loads and it was on our list for ds who is 31 now. Our top girl names on the list were:

Madeleine
Imogen
Cordelia; and
Verity

There was usually a Madeleine in their classes.

I know a few Madeline's/Maddie's aged under 10. People say/think different things before the baby is here vs after they've arrived and own their name. Have never once looked at the Maddie's I know and thought Mcaan. Might do after this post.
