Did you use the baby names you chose before pregnancy?

If you made a baby name list years before you first fell pregnant, did you actually name any of your DC any of the names on your list? I know a lot of women and some men have these lists (even if not written down) but am wondering how often they’re even utilised. I feel like most couples ultimately use names that weren’t even on their radar.

Didn't have a list but had chosen Ds1's name years before I was pregnant and did use it. I loved it and still did when he was born (and still do). DC2's name was decided after birth as none of the ones on our list suited them.

I didn't have a list, but I've had favourite names throughout my life that I've causally thought I would use one day if I had a son/daughter. My tastes have definitely changed over the years!

I have one daughter currently and her name became a favourite in my mind in 2020 when I heard it in a film. Kept it quiet for about 3.5 years until I was expecting and fortunately my husband liked it.

I don’t anyone normal has baby name lists when not pregnant or trying to become so, apart from right year olds naming their dolls or imaginary future babies!

RubyEspadrilles · 23/06/2026 09:56

No because I was 13 when I made that list and it was the mid 80s. Don't think my 2010s born children would have appreciated being called Scott and Charlene (especially as they are both boys).
Also DH didn't really like most of my later choices although I didn't have a list as such, and I didn't like his favourites, so we went for names we were both OK with.

lemoncurdcupcake · 23/06/2026 10:00

Nope. Had two names that I've loved since I was a teenager which are family names for me, however one was very similar to a name given to one of my siblings children and the other DH didn't love. We've used other family names instead, and perhaps it's that thing of 'people become their name' but I don't think either of my children would have suited the names I had pegged before pregnancy as much as they suit the ones they have.

I didn't even use the name I chose when I was pregnant!

🤣🤣🤣

Yes! I had a rolling list that I’ve added to and taken away from since I was a teen. I used a name for baby DS that had been on that list for a good while and I love it. When I put it on the list it was fairly low in popularity however it’s definitely had a surge this last couple of years. I don’t care though I’d still choose it again and it really suits him somehow.

HedgehogShoes · 23/06/2026 10:04

Nope. DH vetoed Titas because it sounds like Tight-Ass - fair enough. And as it happened I didn't have boys so never got the chance anyway.

My favourite girl's name was Elsa because the lion movie but then Frozen came out and ruined the name for me.

Chiapotayto · 23/06/2026 10:06

Nope. Much to DH’s annoyance. But the name we chose before I got pregnant was definitely off the list once I got pregnant. No idea why, it was a very normal name, but I didn’t like it anymore.

Thmi74ci7rv · 23/06/2026 10:06

Aww, I chose DD's name when I was 18 and didn't have her until I was 24

EmiliaRuusuvuori · 23/06/2026 10:17

I used a name I had liked since I was a teenager for one of mine. I still really like it.
Unfortunately my DM used a very old fashioned name for me. She had named her doll this when she was 4 and she was 31 when I was born. She had always said she would call a daughter this name if she had one. It's never been popular.

itsanamething · 23/06/2026 10:29

My second got the name I've loved since I was a teenager! My other half vetoed it first time around but fortunately second born was the same sex.

Charlotte120221 · 23/06/2026 13:25

DS was given one of the names from our list....

When DD arrived 2 years later we found out we'd gone off all the girls names we had lined up - so she went nameless for a week while we decided

Some people like names & etymology and making name lists. Nothing abnormal about that.

littlemissalwaystired · 23/06/2026 21:49

Yes, she was the name we discussed years ago.

RubyPowderPuff · 23/06/2026 21:54

Yes, I had a special name for as long as I can remember... sadly DH didn't like my choice for a DD so went went with something completely different.

Luckily 2nd DC was a boy and DH knew that I wouldn't compromise 🤣

APinkAndSpottyGiraffey · 23/06/2026 22:11

I decided in very early pregnancy and used the name I’d decided on both times, one boy and one girl. Fortunately DH agreed 😂

timoteigirl · 24/06/2026 22:37

No didn't take a name from pregnancy list. Those names were very long and romantic and not matching surname. My tastes have changed since and if I had another, would be more likely to use a family name.

Giraffehaver · 24/06/2026 23:38

Nope! In fact we came up with a totally different name we hadn't considered after she made an appearance

raisinglittlepeople12 · 24/06/2026 23:40

I had a few names I’ve loved for years, but my husband hated them all. The name he ultimately chose at complete random happened to be one I’ve always loved but not actually considered. It is perfect.
