Scandi boy name? I asked a while back about a Scandi boy name that works in both the UK and Sweden... We have another name in mind now as well so wondered which name people like the best between: Nils and Otto?

Bear in mind, Nils is currently top 4 most given baby boy name in Sweden and Otto comes at no. 10.

I like Anders too, but it's not pronounced how it's spelled - in English at any rate. It's AHN-derz and it's lovely! I worked for a Swedish company for six years, so I picked up a few bits and bobs. Tack så mycket!

Vote for Nils (Holgerson) but my favourite is Leif

Firebird83 · 15/06/2026 18:56

Nils (prefer Niels though)

StormGazing · 15/06/2026 18:58

Stellen is my favourite followed by Soren

Binfire · 15/06/2026 18:59

My immediate thought was Soren. Beautiful.

A "scandi" name is not the same as a Swedish name. You want a Swedish name?

Otto is not pronounced the same in English and Swedish so I'd go with Nils out of the two. It won't be pronounced exactly the same in Swedish and English but the two pronounciations are fairly similar.

Otto cute. I also like Rasmus.

SwedishEdith · 15/06/2026 19:12

I love Linus. I know it's not Swedish origin but it's popular there.

Agree in Stellen and Rasmus as well.

But in Scandinavian it's Søren.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 15/06/2026 19:30

I love Julius

NormasArse · 15/06/2026 19:32

How are they both pronounced in Swedish?

Angelsarewithme · 15/06/2026 19:41

I like the name Nils but I don’t like the nickname “Nisse” that most Swedish Nils’s get called . Otto is cute but yes it’s pronounced slightly differently in Sweden and England but that wouldn’t matter much to me personally. Other suggestions : Axel, Stellan, Anton, Oscar.

Bellybellas · 15/06/2026 20:21

Otto is dreadful! It’s actually comical in Germany

Gowlett · 15/06/2026 20:24

Soren is really nice.

There's no such thing as "Scandinavian". It’s Sören in Swedish.

Björn vs Nils | Mumsnet

I prefer Björn to Otto.
