Julius or Julian?

Sort of a follow-up to my post yesterday…My husband always loved Julian and I preferred Julius. I’m due in a couple of weeks so revisiting our short list and now I like both, though they feel quite different to me. Do they paint very different images? Which is better? So hard to decide!

OP posts:

Sorry but I hate both. They are so….smug.

HugoThatway · 08/06/2026 16:52

Julius. Julian sounds wet.

midlifeattheoasis · 08/06/2026 16:57

Both are awful names and quite dated in my opinion

SilverPink · 08/06/2026 16:59

Julian is dated. Julius just makes me think of Julius Caesar so it’s ok if you like Roman history.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 08/06/2026 17:00

I don’t like either…

FoxHedgehogBadger · 08/06/2026 17:08

I adore the name Julian, one of my favourite boys names! My great-grandfather was named Julian and my grandmother named Juliana after him. Top choice from me.

FoxHedgehogBadger · 08/06/2026 17:13

To add in answer to your question -
They do give me different images.
Julias - European, romantic
Julian - classic, strong

Side point but both remind me of Christmas because my grandparents were Nordic and celebrated Jul (Christmas). Though I’d use Julian at any time of year.

Bellybellas · 08/06/2026 17:15

Julian is a great classic solid name! It’s also easier to say than Julius imo.

Calliopespa · 08/06/2026 17:26

Julius sounds stronger but some people will get rubbed up the wrong way by it.

Julian will dodge annoying people. They may think a bit posh and wet but they won't think posh, arrogant and annoying.

I prefer Julius but I do think it's a risk. I'd name myself that but not a child...

Julian. Probably because I have an ex called Julius who is a bit of a sleaze.

oliviaAustin · 08/06/2026 17:34

I like both. Julian marginally more.

Moveoverdarlin · 08/06/2026 17:39

Both awful.

Julian - really dated. Reminds me of an 80s yuppie that carries a Filofax and would be mates with Adrian Mole.

Julius - was christened Jonathan in 1971, but changed his name in 1998 after his first Glastonbury and a night on LSD. Now lives in a wigwam.

ThreeStripeFrankie · 08/06/2026 17:44

I like both but Julius has the edge for me.
I snogged a Julius at a rave when I was 15 he was gorgeous.

HugoThatway · 08/06/2026 17:59

I don't like either of them.

Berlinlover · 08/06/2026 18:01

Neither.

VerityUnreasonble · 08/06/2026 18:04

Julian is better.
Julius is the Paul Frank monkey.

Instructions · 08/06/2026 18:04

Julius of the two; Julian makes me think of The Famous Five

rogueone · 08/06/2026 18:05

Be prepared for them to be called Jools, both people I know who are named Julian and juliuis end up being called Jools

😂😂

Carouselfish · 08/06/2026 20:18

I have totally different vibes for these. Julius is a big African American dude who also drinks Orange Julius.
Julian is Clary. Im 45 so younger people probably dont know him.

BotterMon · 08/06/2026 20:24

Compromise with Jules?

LilyLemonade · 08/06/2026 21:52

I really like both. I think I would go for Julius, it sounds more modern.

Xmasallergies · 08/06/2026 21:53

Julian - posh
Julius - maybe a ballet dancer, artist, musician

trendysetter · 08/06/2026 21:54

All I hear is Julie so they both always sound really girly to me.

Bunnyofhope · 08/06/2026 21:54

Julian is better.
