What do you think of the name Promise for a baby girl?

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
Venicelagoon · 04/06/2026 21:56

As in "I'm on a promise!" ? Im afraid I think this could invite ridicule especially when shes older.

Cookingandfoldingthings · 04/06/2026 21:56

It’s a lovely name. However i fear it will be a challenge for her as she grows up - So much potential for being teased, not all in a good way either. So, no, don’t do it.

Giraffehaver · 04/06/2026 22:15

Not a brilliant idea as outlined by pps

Wynter25 · 04/06/2026 22:15

Awful

Twoshoesnewshoes · 04/06/2026 22:16

It’s lovey @BlueMoon37

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/06/2026 22:17

Ridiculous.

Gabitule · 04/06/2026 22:17

hmm, no

OtterandaRock · 04/06/2026 22:19

It depends on your family culture and immediate community. Are there a lot of similar names? Mercy, Patience, Hope, Charis, and so on? Maybe Désirée, Precious, Golden? Fine, if so.

If not, how about Primrose or Priscilla?

OtterandaRock · 04/06/2026 22:21

Haven't Faith, Verity, and Prudence become ordinary names? They are similar.

WaitingForMojo · 04/06/2026 22:22

‘On a promise’ was my first thought too. Sorry.

I understand that culturally it might be mainstream, but in the U.K. it will invite ridicule.

OtterandaRock · 04/06/2026 22:23

I had to Google 'on a promise' 😳 It is not universal British slang...

bigsoftcocks · 04/06/2026 22:26

I see where you are coming from but I think it will causes issues as child gets older.

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 04/06/2026 22:27

It just makes me think of "on a promise" to me too.

I’m 62…it’s always been a thing in my area.

I am younger than you but probably just was not paying attention to how these things are done!

Firebird83 · 04/06/2026 22:53

Fine as a middle name

Viviennemary · 04/06/2026 22:54

Dreadful. Just no.

ThroughTheRedDoor · 04/06/2026 22:55

I know a promise. He's a man.

Dragonflyspeeding · 04/06/2026 22:56

Is it a cultural name for you?
I tjhink that might make a difference?

user1492757084 · 05/06/2026 04:49

I dislike Promise or nick names .. Pro and Missy.
Other suggestions:
Honora
Honor
Trudy

TerfOnATrain · 05/06/2026 04:54

Not for me I’m afraid, I also thought “on a promise” immediately or that she would be free to be “promised to someone”. I think it makes her sound like chattel.

Stoicandhappy · 05/06/2026 05:25

Nope

EnidVance · 05/06/2026 12:42

Generally names like Promise or Beloved or Blessed are cultural. Is that the case?
