Nyleen/Nylene

Do you like Nyleen/Nylene (not sure of the spelling) for a girl, or is it too unusual? I can’t remember where I first heard this name, but I remember thinking it was pretty. I certainly like it more than Darlene, Marlene, Maureen, and Norene, as it feels fresher. I actually think this style of name is due a comeback.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

It’s a name for something chemical or medical. Certainly not for a human child.

This. Please don’t burden a baby with this name.

Of the ‘een’ names I only like Roisin and Irene (pref pronounced Ireney)

Nylene sounds like a very chemically cleaning product.

Marlene?

Sid9nie · 04/06/2026 06:43

Too close to nylon.

Calliopespa · 04/06/2026 06:46

It is odd though that every time there are a few threads about certain names being awful - and the Maureens/Doreens have been a recent feature of some of the what names won't come back threads - someone suddenly pops up suggesting an uber version of such names.

Anyway, I'll suggest Ray-Jan (Dutch pronunciation) and Polly-Eurathane (hyphenated yoonique)

Calliopespa · 04/06/2026 06:48

And come on, let's not forget Jolene.

astrozenica · 04/06/2026 06:48

Sounds too close to nylon IMO.
I'd suggest Noeleen instead.

abracadabra1980 · 04/06/2026 06:50

Nylon is not a good name 🫤

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 04/06/2026 06:54

Marlene was a character in Only Fools and Horses.

Then there is Myleene Klass the musician and TV presenter.

Then there is the NZ actress Nyree Dawn Porter.

I any of these are pretty names and better than Nyleene..

Actually Nyree is pretty.

I knew a German woman called Marlene and it is a German name. combines Maria and Magdalene.

What about Charlene? Neighbours. Showing my age there.

Sorry, no I don't like it.
Not pretty or quirky or interesting.
It's shoving together the worst syllables of other awful names.
But I am a stranger on the internet. We'll never meet, so does my opinion even matter?

That's what makes it matter. We are never honest about name choices IRL as it's too awkward if they go ahead and choose it anyway.

Bit like I never say "I never liked him anyway" after a break-up lest they reunite...

Isn’t that a brand of hair remover ?

I think that is Jolen, but that spelling is an option!😂

I like it, it’s exotic, like Nylon, Polystyrene, Benzene or Frogmella.

JuliettaCaeser · 04/06/2026 07:14

Are you mid pregnancy? I came up with some insane names at that stage

LanyardSpaghetti · 04/06/2026 07:35

I've never heard it as a name. If I heard it out of context, I'd think:

  • Nylon sheen?
  • Maybe it's a brand of appliance? Should Dyson be scared?
  • Crickey, maybe it's a name of a person... That's bad. It sounds like someone's wanted something like Eileen, but with a twist. Why would anyone want to make Eileen sound like a petrochemical-derived fibre?
SweetBaklava · 04/06/2026 07:40

It’s awful, sorry… and I say that as someone who loves an unusual name

sweetpotatowedgeswithmayo · 04/06/2026 07:51

Horrendous, sorry. Like a pp said, it’s like a name from 1970s Australia. It’s truly awful.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 04/06/2026 08:40

I actually think Nyree is beautiful option.

pinkdelight · 04/06/2026 08:43

Well yes, and I like Nyleen better than stubbing my toe, but that doesn't make it a nice name.

user1492757084 · 04/06/2026 09:06

Not for me. Too much like nylon.
I prefer..
Eileen
Aileen
Calico
Velvet
Dimity
Ngaire - pronounced Nye ree.

FryingPam · 04/06/2026 09:09

My brain thinks Nylon. I think you can find many better names with similar sounds.

AWeeCupOfTeaAndAnIndividualFruitTrifle · 04/06/2026 09:15

It sounds like Chuck Berry's disappointing follow-up flop song after storming the charts with Nadine and Maybellene.
