Cyrus?

Thoughts on Cyrus (boy)? It is an established male first name that is separate from the surname, but I do wonder if it is too associated with Miley Cyrus. I don't exactly want the first thought to be a celebrity when they hear DS's name.

OP posts:
Are your children’s vaccines up to date?

Are you Persian?

Makes me think of Cyrus the Great. Not a bad person to be named after. But if you are not Iranian I don't think it would be appropriate.

Hinthebuild · 03/06/2026 12:27

It's a nice name. Even if not Persian, I don't think it's inappropriate to use a name that has become popularised and works in English. Many (probably most) of the names that are quite popular in the UK are from other countries/languages (Hebrew, French, Arabic, German, Greek, Italian, Spanish, etc.). How would we even begin to decide which ones are acceptable to use and which aren't?

I've got one!! He loves it as does everyone we tell!
He plays a sport and is always remembered wherever we travel to.

butteriesplease · 03/06/2026 12:30

there is a lovely place called St Cyrus on the coast just near Montrose, and it would make me think of that.

Strongly agree. I would bet the majority of parents do not limit their options to only British names so feels a bit hypocritical.

I like it - know a baby and adult Cyrus - it suits both

SkippitySkoppity · 03/06/2026 20:01

Cyrus the Virus. John Malkovich's psycho character in Con Air.

Yes, I'm highbrow.

PickledMuffin · 03/06/2026 20:04

I think Cyrus the virus too, which really annoys me as I have a friend called Cyrus and I think it’s a lovely name. Con Air has a lot of answer to!

I'm from Aberdeenshire but even with that my mind instantly went to Miley Cyrus, with St Cyrus being the second thought. Sorry OP!

Firebird83 · 04/06/2026 23:11

I like it and I think it would be more popular if it didn’t have the Miley Cyrus association.

Firebird83 · 04/06/2026 23:12

Silas is a similar sounding alternative

GladHazelPoster · 14/06/2026 11:56

Conor, Cornelius, Cian, Cormac are all great

user293948849167 · 14/06/2026 12:51

I like it, I wouldn’t think of Myley Cyrus

Moltenpink · 14/06/2026 12:55

I didn’t know that was a name but it’s lovely.

SwedishEdith · 14/06/2026 13:00

My first thought was Cyrus Vance which I always thought was a great name. But now Vance is a tainted name. Miley didn't cross my mind. Nor Billy Ray.
