Shorted to Sam. Also is it too popular? Many thanks in advance ☺️

Samuel, please! Do not call your baby Samson.

Fartughtyred · 31/05/2026 14:24

Samuel would be my preference. Lovely timeless name for a boy which means 'Heard by God'
Good choice!

NuffSaidSam · 31/05/2026 14:36

Samuel.

I don't like Samson.

TinyMouseTheatre · 31/05/2026 14:39

I actually prefer Sampson. Is they an option?

StationJack · 31/05/2026 14:42

Have you started several threads @Asid12 ? The names Bobby, Robert, Rufus, Jasper, Sam, Leo ... have been in lots of threads recently.

I suggested Samson on one of them. It was used in Cornwall when religious names were common in the past. You could also have Samwise.

Piggywaspushed · 31/05/2026 14:43

Sam was very popular in the late 90s up to about 2008. It's waned a bit. It's a solid name.

Calliopespa · 31/05/2026 15:09

Samuel is lovely and has not been used so much in recent decades.

The other is a bit ridiculous imo.

You could indeed call your son Samwise, but why would you?

StationJack · 31/05/2026 15:37

Pregnancy hormones or a Tolkien fan, @KilkennyCats

Isn't Sampson a surname @NuffSaidSam ? I think he'd be saying 'Sampson with a P' a lot.

BoleynMemories13 · 31/05/2026 15:41

Definitely Samuel. I'm not a fan of 'son' names in general.

It's a classic, so very popular over different generations but not necessarily popular currently within his own age group. I think it's currently floating around the top 50, so it depends what your definition of 'too popular' is, but personally that wouldn't bother me in the slightest.

I actually only know of two boys called Samuel under the age of 12. Both just go by 'Sam'.

StationJack · 31/05/2026 18:25

@BoleynMemories13 , Samson is a name from the Bible and is from the Hebrew Shimshon.

cheapskatemum · 31/05/2026 19:02

Both biblical & the story of Samuel is way preferable to the story of Samson. A former boyfriend’s dog was called Samson. I think it makes a better dog name.

StationJack · 31/05/2026 19:04

It would make a good name for a big rough-haired dog. Smile 🐕

Firebird83 · 31/05/2026 19:07

Samuel. I have one 😊

JimBobsWife · 31/05/2026 19:09

If he's going to be called Sam, why not just name him Sam?

TooCute · 31/05/2026 19:11

Samuel.

Definitely not Samson

Yogabearmous · 31/05/2026 19:13

samuel means “god has heard”
I think that is beautiful

Yes, I'm very aware it's a biblical name.

When I said I'm not a fan of 'son' names, I wasn't for one second saying I thought Samson was a modern trend name. I just don't like the sound, that's all (and, depending on the surname, I think many 'son' names can sound quite jarring).

StationJack · 31/05/2026 20:48

And I was saying that it's not like most of the son names. Jason and Alison aren't either, but Jenson and Madison are.

EnidVance · 01/06/2026 13:41

I really like Samuel but it is popular where I am. There are 6 in my DC’s school year and a friend has one.

Me too.
He’s in Sixth Form now. It’s always been a name that is well known but not overused amongst his peers.
He is very tall and strong though, so he gets called Samson sometimes anyway.

PancakeCloud · 01/06/2026 16:30

Surprised by the Samson hate. I like Samson.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · Yesterday 14:44

I toyed with Isambard too for a while when I was expecting my Samuel.

That's not a name.

Samson and Samuel are both very biblical, but I like Samuel.

KnickerlessParsons · Yesterday 14:48

Samson is a lot to live up to though, what if he turns out small and weedy 😄
