Thoughts on Clarice?

My husband so badly wants to name our daughter Clarice but I can’t help but think of silence of the lambs and that’s exactly the character he wants to name her after cause he thinks she’s a badass. I suggested Clarisse instead but he says no if it’s not spelled the same. I picked the middle names after my grandmother so I really want to let him lead on the first name so I just need some outside opinions on the name.

Silence of the lambs or Clarice Bean.

But mostly Silence of the lambs.

How about Clarissa or Carissa

HogletPatricia · 30/05/2026 10:23

I haven't heard of Clarisse, how is it pronounced?

WingingItMam48 · 30/05/2026 10:24

Yep sorry just thinking of silence of the lambs. Or Clarice Cliff, but think most people who get Hannibal lector vibes!

vichill · 30/05/2026 10:25

Cla-Riss or Cla-Reece? I’ve met one and pronounced Clariss like Clarice Cliff. I prefer that.

TidyDancer · 30/05/2026 10:25

I quite like the name but I think you’re right. I’m not sure if her generation would make the connection though.

“Have the lambs stopped screaming?” was my immediate thought before I opened your thread and I imagine there would be lots like me.

HateThese4Leggedbeasts · 30/05/2026 10:25

Immediately I thought of the link to silence of the lambs. It's not a common name so it will take a long time for that to pass out of association but your DD might be young enough I guess.

vichill · 30/05/2026 10:27

Clarice Cliff is a fantastic woman to be named after, granted I am biased being from the Potteries.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 30/05/2026 10:29

Most younger people won’t be that bothered with the film. I’ve never seen it and o think it’s a great name. There’s umpteen names which could be associated with a nasty character but it’s not stopping them being used. We are not all bothered with film!

Iamacatslave · 30/05/2026 10:31

Silence of the Lambs.

LittleGreenShoots · 30/05/2026 10:31

I think if you like the name go for it. It's a brief movie connection, older people will make it but for their peer group they won't know it at all. You'd expect the older generations to know better than to quote the movie at her!

My best friend wanted to call her son Felix- this was twenty years ago and it wasn't used much then- we all said of course not that's a cartoon cat, it will sound silly everyone is going to be thinking cat when you introduce him.

She went ahead with Felix and honestly that reference was completely overwritten by a real person very quickly and the name association only fades more with time. It's not like Clarice it even a bad movie character.

SlightlyAjar · 30/05/2026 10:36

The main association is Clarice Lispector for me, but I just don’t think it’s a nice set of sounds.

HairyToity · 30/05/2026 10:38

I prefer the name Clarrie.

Rowgtfc72 · 30/05/2026 10:41

First thought was silence of the lambs.

We were going to call dd Emily-Rose just before the exorcism film came out.
We changed our minds.

Whatadayyyyyyy · 30/05/2026 10:42

I read that in Hannibal lecters voice

Misnofitness · 30/05/2026 10:44

Noooooo…. They have actually just brought out a new series called Clarice about the character.

i just can’t hear the name without the Anthony Hopkins voice

user293948849167 · 30/05/2026 10:45

Sorry but “have the lambs stopped screaming Clarice” is what I thought of

Maybe Clarissa instead? That’s pretty

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 30/05/2026 10:45

I’ve taught a Clarice and never once made that connection. Maybe because I didn’t like the film much and saw it a long, long time ago.

DirtyGertiefromno30 · 30/05/2026 10:45

It's lovely, so refined .

EnidVance · 30/05/2026 11:57

I read it in Anthony Hopkins’ voice.

Do you actually like the name?

Gosh, I think it’s the opposite . I mean, Thomas Harris chose Clarice Starling’s name to convey her ‘poor white trash’ status — ‘hustling rube with cheap shoes’ or whatever it is Lecter says to her when they meet. She’s an admirable character, obviously, but a large part of it is overcoming the limitations of an impoverished rural upbringing.

StationJack · 30/05/2026 12:10

Most younger people won’t be that bothered with the film. I’ve never seen it@MeetMeOnTheCorner , look on any thread about the name Marnie and see how often the Hitchcock film is referred to. It came out in 1964,

Just because you haven't seen the film doesn't mean others won't, and it might be remade.

Calliopespa · 30/05/2026 12:12

I'd go with Clarissa, which is prettier and moves it into Enid Blyton territory.

I had a Clarissa at school. It wasn't common, but she wore it well.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 30/05/2026 12:13

Clareeeeeesss

Same. I can only say it in Lecter's voice. It's actually a family name and I did half think it would have made a great middle name but I can't get past only saying it that way. 😄
