Lewis and Cameron

I love the names Lewis and Cameron for a boy, but DH dislikes surnames as first names. I think of Lewis and Cameron as first names before I do as surnames. Am I wrong in thinking that these names are in a completely different category that is separate from names like Kennedy or Anderson?

OP posts:

They are good, solid names unlike a lot of the diminutive crap you hear in your average primary classroom nowadays.
But if your DH doesn’t like them it’s a non starter.

I don't understand the aversion to first names that also happen to be surnames. I don't think people comprehend just how many first names are also surnames. Bennett and Francis are two that come to mind.

MiaKulper · 27/05/2026 09:50

George, James, Oliver can be surnames, @LemonFlavour , but they are common first names.
Hudson, Cooper, Piper and Harper are used as first names but they are surnames.

Lewis and Cameron are somewhere in between IMO. I'm not keen
on either of them as first names but they're good surnames.

@TimeOnceUpon , i don't like Lew and Cam, and every Cameron I know is a Cam, if that helps.

BoleynMemories13 · 27/05/2026 19:45

I agree with you. Although they can both be surnames, they are very well established as first names. They definitely don't fit the Jackson, Hunter, Cater, Cooper, Carson trend.

I've always liked Lewis. I'm less keen on Cameron as a full name, but Cam is quite a cool short form.

MiaKulper · 28/05/2026 10:16

@BoleynMemories13 , I don't. Makes me think of cam shaft.

PygmyOwl · 28/05/2026 10:22

I agree with you OP - I often don't like surnames as first names but I think these are fine. But I guess if he doesn't like them then that's his preference.

FoxHedgehogBadger · 28/05/2026 10:44

All surnames are just names. At one point in history people didn’t have them, they were introduced to distinguish people with the same name. So I always think it’s silly when people say a name can only be a surname or a first name.
Lewis and Cameron are both lovely names IMO, but you and DH need to find a name that you both love and agree on.

MiaKulper · 28/05/2026 10:52

All surnames are just names. All surnames are surnames. Not all first names are surnames. Not all surnames are first names. They could be but would you want to name your child something like Butcher, Crapper or Cockhead?

starfire88 · 30/05/2026 21:24

As someone whose surname is a very popular boys name, I think Lewis and Cameron are perfectly fine as first names 😅

AgnesMcDoo · 30/05/2026 21:31

Love them both. Good traditional Scottish names.

SkippitySkoppity · 30/05/2026 21:33

I think they're widely accepted as first names these days. Lots of Scottish surnames became first names, other common ones I can think of are Fraser, Blair, Stewart, Murray...which is why I do roll my eyes a bit at people complaining about the supposed American trend of surnames as first names. But I'm not sure they're in a completely different category to Kennedy and Anderson, those names just haven't been first names for as long.

But if your husband dislikes the names this is all probably irrelevant.

Gertibear · 30/05/2026 23:37

Both to me are first names. I know many with the name and none with it as a surname. I think he’s very wrong. I also love Lewis as a boys name. All the Cameron’s I know go by Cammy.

MiaKulper · 31/05/2026 00:01

@Gertibear , I know far more people with the surnames. Cammy is dreadful.

User6761 · 31/05/2026 00:29

I know Scottish brothers Lewis, Cameron and Gregor. Really like the names.
