Help with baby boy names! Impressions and suggestions appreciated

Hi,
I need some help choosing a baby name for our little boy who’s here in June. We don’t want to ask family due to judgment so I thought I’d ask strangers on the internet 🫠 I’m open to suggestions btw. Bastially so far our favourite has been Beau, however my SO just found out his second cousin has that name and now isn’t fond because he doesn’t like the idea of the name being shared… doesn’t bother me but bothers him however he’s still open to the name. So I’m sorta looking to see how others feel about that name also as he’s not against having it just since finding that out has been looking out for other names.

he likes Romeo - not sure if I’m being dramatic but Romeo to me sounds a bit too lover boy but maybe other people don’t think that straight away.

other potentials;

Lirio (Spanish for Lily - my name, would be Rio for short, he likes the idea of our first child being named after me)
Sage
Eden (not sure personally)

I personally love Nico but he’s not a fan 🥲

could really do with some suggestions as Beau still is the winner for me. I want a name that sounds continental or unique, but not so much so that it sounds celebrity silly. If it makes a difference the surname is Bastian.

so basically the list is:

beau
romeo
sage
eden
lirio

thank you so much

I'm really sorry but I don't like any of them

Beau ~ ok-ish for a baby but I cant imagine it as a mans name
Romeo ~ too many connections to Romeo & Juliet
Sage ~ never heard of it used as a name so I only associate it with the herb
Eden ~ it's been popular as a girls name, often with a nickname of Edie, I wouldn't have thought of it as a boys name
Lirio ~ never heard of it, but to be fair, probably the best of the five

Thank you for the input anyway! I understand they’re quite an acquired taste 😅

I love Beau, Sage and Nico. What about
Roman

Heath

Acer

Cosmo

Elio

Atticus

Lysander

Xavier

Jago

Lirio will get confused with Larry. Lirio as middle name instead?
I know Eden & Sage as girl names, and Lirio sounds girly too.
Romeo: I thought Beckhams. I wouldn't want a name with so many vivid connotations.

Beau Bastian works well. I guess originally it was Beauregard? I like long names that lead to a variety of nicknames so I'd look at the long version. Beauregard is very European I gather.

Beau is probably still my favourite as I like the alliteration also

Beau Bastian is awful.

TeenToTwenties · 24/05/2026 09:26

None of them are my cup of tea at all.
But continental and unique? (Beau is quite on trend I think so not unique

Luca
Jannik
Carlos

But why not traditional UK names that are less in fashion such as Luke, Charles, John.

I think because most uk names one of us knows someone with a name or has an association or family member so we’re a bit apprehensive. I also just prefer more continental names I think.

I like Luca but the coffee shop downstairs is called Lucas 😂

I don't think I'd be brave enough to use it but I think Lirio/Rio is great.

Chlorpool · 24/05/2026 09:48

I love the name Beau and a second cousin is hardly close.
My cousins ds has the same name as my ds, they’ve never met each other.

Marco, Carlo, Nino all go well with Bastian imo.

Marco is cute but I hate the idea of people shortening it to mark! Same with Carl / carlo sadly because as the original names I think they’re lovely! Nino is cute though! I know I said the same about the second cousin thing I don’t even know what mine is called 😂

I think Beau Bastian is a bit too much together tbh.

Eden I believe is a name for girls.

I was going to suggest something like Florian but that doesn’t go with Bastian.

I actually love Florian as a name but it’s his brother in laws name 🥲

what about Jorgio? Gio for short…

Pemba · 24/05/2026 10:26

I don't like any on your shortlist, except maybe Lirio which I'd not heard of before. That would work, and then it has the family connection. Well I do like Eden, but for a girl. Sage for me is a herb/a cartoon owl/accounting software. Romeo is too associated with the character in the play. No to Beau (sorry I know it's your favourite), I don't know why it's so popular. It sounds something from 'Gone with the Wind', and just really hokey. Also the meaning of 'beautiful/handsome' in French is hard for a boy to live up to throughout life. At least you're not trying to use it for a girl though, which a lot of people seem to.

I did like your suggestion of Nico, can't you get DP to reconsider?

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 24/05/2026 10:30

Romeo is too loverboy but Beau is fine?! Beau Bastian sounds like a naff Marvel Character with the alliteration. Two of my children have alliterative names so I’m not anti that but two more stand out names and suddenly it sounds too much.

Is it Lie - Rio (to rhyme with eye) or Li- Rio (to rhyme with Lily) pronunciation? Not a fan of either but the second is a better pronunciation.

Nico or Roman are fine.

Pemba · 24/05/2026 10:33

Milo or Jude may be the sort of name you like I think? They're nice.

Beau Bastian is really awful actually.

AmberSpy · 24/05/2026 10:43

Romeo is the best on your list but none are great. As I'm sure you know, Beau means handsome/ good looking - I think that's a lot of a pressure to put on a child! Especially if he goes through a bit of an awkward phase, as many kids do.

Eden and Sage are girls' names, I would 100% expect a little girl if I heard that name. Would you consider Rowan - a bit more gender-neutral? Milo and Jude as suggested above are nice too.

Yes sorry i have to say i was thinking the same. Beau Bastian sounds like a fictional character like an alter ego superhero, like Clark Kent

Aside from Beau I like Romeo and sage but they are marmite names for sure!
