Can we use the name Solenne if we are not French? Both English.

Use any name you like 🤷‍♀️ it’s easily pronounced at least.

We gave DD4 a french middle name.

My mother was all cats bum face about it because none of us are french but tough. She's cats bum face about most of my choices in life

DD is 11 now and over the years Lots of people have commented on how lovely it is 😊

Isn't it Solène?

TemporarilyCantDoMyself · 17/05/2026 10:47

Because it's so unusual I looked it up. The meaning would put me off. Shepherdess who became a saint after being killed by her master. Heavily religious and martyr connotations. I think these kind of connotations fade if a name becomes widely used, but as it's so unusual people are going to be curious. So personally I wouldn't unless I was, for some reason, really passionate about the name. It's not so lovely that I can imagine feeling like that.
Other names that spring to mind are Allegra, Odette, Seraphine, Suzanne, Zenobie.

Is it? Is it pronounced ‘sol-een’? Or Sol-en?

Sol Enn

Ah ok. I’m not convinced everyone would pronounce that correctly

HoldItAllTogether · 17/05/2026 11:07

It’s pretty but I’d have guess3d it was Sol-een.

RynneAdele · 17/05/2026 11:08

It is Solene with an accent I believe but 'Solenne' is a variant that I thought would be more pronounceable in the UK. I agree that Solene looks like it's said Soleen but not Solenne, so I thought but thanks for the insight as this is why I posted this to get others views

It does have an air of solemnity about it, but I still think it is quite pretty.

I agree your spelling works better.

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 17/05/2026 14:05

I prefer Solène. That’s the spelling I’m familiar with (and used to be quite popular in France).

but either one is nice :)

OceanSafari · 17/05/2026 16:29

I think it's a lovely name and the way you spelt it made the pronunciation clear.

Gonnaeatalotofpeaches · 18/05/2026 20:50

I don’t think all the people who have had little Margot’s in recent years are French and Sylvie is rising in popularity and also French. I don’t think many people will question it to be honest.

One of my good friends is called Solenne, with thatv spelling. For me its obvious it is pronounced so-len otherwise itv be spelled soleen (also this prononciatiin exists in france but spelled soline)
