We are thinking of naming our daughter "Renie"

How would you pronounce it if you read it?

Ren-ee
Ree-nee
Ruh-nah

Thanks

How would you pronounce it if you read it?
Ren-ee
Ree-nee
Ruh-nah

Who would get "Ruh-nah" from "Renie"?

My first thought was "Rennie" like the tablets, but "Ree-nee" might be more correct.
However, a lot of people are seeing it as "Rennie", at least at first.

Ree-nee. Why don’t you christen her Irene and call her Renie so she has the choice?

HoppityBun · 12/05/2026 10:50

Rennie. As in the tablet. The only Ree- nees I’ve known had it as a nickname and were Irene

NamingNoNames · 12/05/2026 10:50

I'd pronounce it 'How do you say your name? Is it REE-ny or RENNy?'

and secretly judge the parents

There's nothing in the spelling to suggest Renn-AY or Run-AY.

StripedVase · 12/05/2026 11:35

I would say it Reeny, as in short for Irene, which I think is lovely- but I'd have to think about it, and I'd expect it to be mistaken for Renee a lot! That isn't that big a deal though necessarily. My child has a name that's straightforward but often said wrong just because it's a bit unusual. I don't regret giving it to her and she doesn't mind.

OceanSafari · 12/05/2026 11:43

Ree-nee

TappyGilmore · 12/05/2026 11:46

Renny

But I can see how it could be Ree-nee - rhymes with genie.

I don’t see why anyone would pronounce it Renee
or Ruh-nah.

Tigerbalmshark · 12/05/2026 11:47

You could go with Eirini/Irene and shorten it?

Both significantly nicer names than Renie

DaisyChain505 · 12/05/2026 11:48

I’d pronounce it like the medication.

Ree-nee? Or maybe Rennie? Either way it’s not great, sorry. If you want it said Ren-ay like Zellweger then spell it Renée with the accent and the double ee

The Four Tops song is Don't walk away, Renee, pronounced Re-nay, and I've seen that spelt the same Renée.

The Four Tops song is Don't walk away, Renee, pronounced Re-nay, and I've seen that spelt the same Renée.

How it's pronounced in a song isn't the best guide to how to say it.
(Fleetwood Mac's Sara being an example)

Scrumbless · 12/05/2026 13:16

Rennie.

Peonies12 · 12/05/2026 13:19

rennie Like the indigestion tablets. Please don’t do that to her!

TheBirdintheCave · 12/05/2026 13:34

Reenee as it’s spelt like ‘genie’ and not like ‘rennie’. I’d assume it was short for Irene.

IceStationZebra · 12/05/2026 13:36

eiteanpiobardubh · 12/05/2026 08:42

Ree-nee.
I know an 82 year old Renie, short for Irene.

Yes, my gran was a Renie (pronounced Ree-ney) rather than Irene.

Lins77 · 12/05/2026 13:38

Reeny.

Half the women on our street when I was little seemed to be called this.

butterfly1234 · 12/05/2026 13:42

Re-nay, but I'm not sure why. It looks like Renee but the parent is trying to be posh.

guiltynetter · 12/05/2026 13:45

Reenie

whattheysay · 12/05/2026 13:50

SausageRoll2020 · 12/05/2026 08:43

I'd probably pronounce it like Rennie, the digestion tablet.

Same

Calliopespa · 12/05/2026 14:13

Renny or Ree-Knee, as in short for Catherine or Irene.

I can't work out what you are wanting op. It seems to be "Runner" which isn't a name I know of ...

Calliopespa · 12/05/2026 14:14

The "nie" definitely does not produce the sound of a French acute.

ViolaPlains · 12/05/2026 14:16

Ree-neh (northern accent).

Cornishbelle · 12/05/2026 14:18

I feel really old, four pages in and nobody has mentioned allo allo!

user1492757084 · 12/05/2026 14:28

Ree-nee.

Jibaka · 12/05/2026 14:30

Rennie like the tablets. Don’t do it.
