We are thinking of naming our daughter "Renie"

How would you pronounce it if you read it?

Ren-ee
Ree-nee
Ruh-nah

Thanks

If you want Renee then why are you spelling it so oddly? ( can't work out how to do the accent on this phone, but I would have the accent if that's what I meant)

Rennie, same as the indigestion tablets.

Me too.

Why ? Why make it hard? If you want her name pronounced in a certain way then make it evident in the spelling …

It is evident in the spelling. It's Reenee.

TheBeaTgoeson1 · 12/05/2026 08:57

Like the rennie tablets

Babyboomtastic · 12/05/2026 08:57

Like the indigestion tablets.

Dizzydrizzy · 12/05/2026 08:57

rennie like the tablets here too.

NormasArse · 12/05/2026 08:58

Yep- like the tablets was my first thought.

Is there a reason you want to spell it that way? What pronunciation are you wanting?

This

NoYouCantComeToTheWedding · 12/05/2026 08:59

Re-nay.

GenialHarrietGrouty · 12/05/2026 09:00

Reenee. It couldn't be Rennie as it doesn't have a double N.

If that is the pronunciation you want, how about Irenee?

Mischance · 12/05/2026 09:01

Rule no.1 - never give your child a name you do not know how to pronounce!
Rule No.2 - never give your child a name that no-one else will know how to pronounce either and have to spend your whole time correcting people!

Denim4ever · 12/05/2026 09:02

As Ree nee I think it's sometimes a shortening. My aunt of this name was actually called Kathleen.

There's the more often American pronounced Ren nay spelled Rene with an accent

It is evident in the spelling. It's Reenee.

It's not evident because single E doesn't have the same rules as double E.

Tichter · 12/05/2026 08:41

Have you considered Gaviscon?

It's lovely, but I prefer the traditional French pronunciation so we decided against it and named the DTs Calpol and Aspirin.

Indianajet · 12/05/2026 09:04

How do you want it to be pronounced? Spell it that way - Rennie, Reenee or Rene with an accent.

EmeraldRoulette · 12/05/2026 09:06

It took me a while, but as with the previous poster, I would think it rhymes with genie

You do everyone a favour if you spell it with a double E though, including the child

But Rene/Renee ( with accents) are French names.

Yes, but very popular in the US

MaJoady · 12/05/2026 09:12

My instinct would say like "Rennie" but would also think that is was wrong, but not quite know what else it could be

Puddingypops · 12/05/2026 09:15

Re-nay like the French name

NoelEdmondsHairGel · 12/05/2026 09:16

Like genie.

Is it an actual name or a nickname for Irene / Maureen?

AVerySeriousCat · 12/05/2026 09:17

I’d think it was the same pronunciation as the indigestion tablets.

Blueuggboots · 12/05/2026 09:18

Rennie, like the indigestion tablets.

ButterYellowFlowers · 12/05/2026 09:18

Like the acid tablets - reh-knee

MirandaBlu · 12/05/2026 09:18

I've come across both REN-ee (one short for Renata, one for Karen) and REE-nee (short for Serena).

I'd probably guess REN-ee, if no clues.
