No , donโ€™t like them . How about Polly , Elsie , or Edith

Quokka99 · 05/05/2026 00:36

Vera works well with Agnes, and is a classic name. Agnes and Greta both fine on their own but together sound too much like 'Hansel and Gretel'. I think people might struggle to pronounce Eira.

@Idontlikedogsandyesidostillhaveaheart ,the OP wants a scandi/Norse name that works in the UK.

She has started a few threads before.

Greta or maybe Vera.

How about Agnes and Charlotta? Or maybe Ingrid or Inge?

Firebird83 · 05/05/2026 12:03

Agnes and Vera

User6761 · 05/05/2026 12:24

I love Eira - one of my favourite girls names.

But also really like a PPs suggestion of Ingrid. Agnes and Ingrid goes really well.

I also like,
Agnes and Seren
Agnes and Gloria
Agnes and Mary
Agnes and Ishbel

I like Eira and Greta. I'm not sure that Vera is ready to come around again, but that's just my impression of it.

ToadRage · 05/05/2026 12:41

I don't like any of them, never heard of Eira and both Greta and Vera are very old fashioned and not nice sounding names. They make me think of bitter judgemental old ladies.

How is Eira pronounced? Like Eye-Ra?
I like Greta but not the association with Thunberg. Might not be an issue though by the time your child is older.
I don't like Vera

Love Ingrid and Imogen.

DramaAlpaca · 05/05/2026 13:45

I love Agnes and I think Greta goes very well with it.

Ingrid is also lovely, as someone else has suggested.

No! In Welsh itโ€™s pronounced more like Eyra (as in โ€œey youโ€ with a short โ€œraโ€ as in rat without the t)

I like Eira best if youโ€™re in Wales and people are going to say it properly.
Greta if not

Vera is awful

BleedinglyObvious · 05/05/2026 13:57

@user2848502016 , Op isn't Welsh.

"I am Swedish living in the UK, and we are discussing baby names that work in both languages. What are your opinion on the following names? Do they work well in English? (they are all well-known Swedish names)"

"Yeh, like the month. Thanks for your opinion! Yes, Eira is also a Welsh name, and we live on the Welsh border so for us that isn't a problem. I think it can be pronounced "Eye-ruh" for both English and Welsh. <3 Thanks!"

(You might not agree with "pronounced "Eye-ruh" for both English and Welsh." I think it's awful)

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 05/05/2026 16:39

I like Vera.

C/Klara or C/Karla?
