DH and I have very different taste in names, and we're not any closer to having the actual name. Please rank the names on our combined list.

Alexis
Claudette
Elsie
Jana
Jocelyn
Layla
Leighton
Loretta
Lydia
Mary
Octavia
Whitney

Alexis - I knew a boy Alexis, not a fan, Alexandra so much nicer
Claudette - really old-fashioned, not a fan. Claudia is ok.
Elsie - nice, popular
Jana - like Jana Novotna? Not a fan.
Jocelyn - really underused and pretty name
Layla - popular but beautiful name
Leighton - only known male Leightons and really not a fan
Loretta - ok
Lydia - good name
Mary - fine, inoffensive
Octavia - ok
Whitney - not a fan

I'd go for Layla, Jocelyn, Lydia or Elsie.

Peanutlicious · 27/04/2026 22:36

Lydia and Layla

DramaAlpaca · 27/04/2026 22:36

I like Lydia, Mary, Alexis and maybe Jocelyn.

The rest aren't my thing. I strongly dislike Elsie, Leighton, Whitney, Claudette and Loretta.

Someone above suggested Claudine - that's nice.

Sofasophie · 27/04/2026 22:45

Alexis - drab
Claudette - awful
Elsie - like a lot
Jana - too many pronunciations
Jocelyn - awful
Layla - old and outdated
Leighton - sounds like from Thomas the tank engine and friends
Loretta - ok
Lydia - ok but outdated
Mary - forever classic
Octavia - no/ p’ss take with the relation to oct meaning 8
Whitney - well out of date!

Elsie gets my vote.

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 27/04/2026 22:45

Ok. But not Leighton or Whitney. Not keen on Alexis or Mary. Elsie is over used and a bit scullery maid. Loretta Lynn? Octavia, Lydia, Jocelyn, Layla and Claudette all ok - or Claudia!

80smonster · 27/04/2026 22:46

Ugh, anything but not sodding Layla, such an everywhere name and not in a zeitgeist way either.

Ikeameatballs · 27/04/2026 22:46

Like: Lydia, Jana and Mary
Ok: Elsie, Claudette, Loretta, Layla, Jocelyn
Dislike: Whitney, Octavia, Leighton, Alexis

Delici · 27/04/2026 22:48

Most are truly awful!

At a push-
Claudette (Claudia is nicer by a million miles)
Elsie
Layla
Loretta (prefer Lori)
Mary

These are awful:
Alexis
Jana
Jocelyn
Leighton
Lydia
Mary
Octavia
Whitney

Delici · 27/04/2026 22:50

Whitney???

NightNightSky · 27/04/2026 22:52

Elsie
Mary
Lydia
Layla
Alexis

These are the front runners but it's honestly not a great list. I think you need to keep looking

SleepingStandingUp · 27/04/2026 22:53

Like:
Octavia
Alexis
Jocelyn
Elsie

Passable:
Mary
Lydia
Layla
Jana

Nope:
Claudette
Leighton
Loretta
Whitney

Denim4ever · 27/04/2026 22:54

Claudette and Alexis yes - the former classy and the latter fun
Whitney and Mary no - the former Eastenders vibes not Houston and the latter a plain name she wil grow to hate as it's very dull

The rest all ho hum

Pemba · Yesterday 00:07

Lydia is lovely, and I like the very classic Mary - time for a revival with that.

Layla is nice, although the spelling Leila is more traditional and classy imo. Quite like Octavia, and it's fairly unusual.

I don't like Whitney much, or Elsie although I realise it's very popular right now. Elise or Eloise?

Notabarbie · Yesterday 00:12

I think Jocelyn or Jana.

StephQ1 · Yesterday 00:17

I’m not a big fan of any of them to be honest.

Octavia reminds me of the scraggy ostrich on Pipkins.

StellaOlivetti · Yesterday 00:39

I love Lydia and Mary
i like Joscelyn, but only this spelling
i dont like the others sorry.

Growlybear83 · Yesterday 01:06

I quite like Mary but none of the others. All I can think of when I hear the name Lydia is Kermit the frog singing Lydia the tattooed lady. And calling a child Elsie is just cruel.

ShesnoGeordielass · Yesterday 01:25

Lydia and Octavia.

I really dislike the others.

mathanxiety · Yesterday 01:40

Alexis - no, too close to Alexa. Also, a boy name (name of the murdered Czarevich).
Claudette - 'ette' names are passe in France, but in the UK this would be OK. Not too bad.
Elsie - bar maid name. No.
Jana - pronounced 'Jayna' or 'Yana'? Not really keen on either.
Jocelyn - unusual, has a nice mid century vibe. Not bad.
Layla - quite widely used, pleasant enough.
Leighton - dislike. Leigh is nice. Leighton, not nice.
Loretta - old fashioned Little Italy name. A bit dumpy. Dislike.
Lydia - quite 'church lady'. Not keen.
Mary - stylish, classic name. Nice.
Octavia - downmarket in the US, but quite posh in the UK. I'd avoid.
Whitney - absolutely not. This is a very dated name and not very nice imo.

So,
Claudette
Jocelyn
Layla
Mary

...are the only names I'd consider.

49mumof6 · Yesterday 02:32

I like Elise but it is getting popular same with Layla
Love Mary and Octavia not heard many babies being called either of these
Claudette and Lydia are okay
Sorry don’t like the rest of them

HighburyHope · Yesterday 04:34

I like and would use: Lydia, Mary

Interesting, though not my style: Alexis, Elsie, Jocelyn, Octavia

Don’t like the rest.

You do have a mix of styles there - with some frilly femininity (Claudette, Loretta) and some more gender-neutral. Leighton and Elsie seem to belong on different continents.

Could something like Laurie bridge the gap, perhaps?

MaggieBsBoat · Yesterday 04:45

Mary
The rest are awful and Leighton is a boy‘s name.

leopardandspots · Yesterday 05:04

In order:

  1. Lydia
  2. Octavia
  3. Mary or Elsie ( third equal)
  4. Alexis
  5. Claudette

————-

i would not be keen on these. Are these yours or DHs

6 Loretta or Jana or Layla ( Leila spelt differently would be higher)
7.Whitney
8.Jocelyn
9.Leighton ( Really bad like Leyton in East London).

wiwaprwfimh70 · Yesterday 05:05

Alexis- okay
Claudette- Clunky
Elsie- dislike
Jana- dislike
Jocelyn- dislike

StopFeckingSnoring · Yesterday 05:21

Lydia best, then Mary. Don’t like any others.
