I didn't know that. I just associate it with a character who was in Corrie years ago!

I had taught so many little girls called Ivy over the last few years-it’s very popular!

miniaturepixieonacid · 29/04/2026 15:03

I think most names will cycle unless there becomes a reason not to.

So, in the UK:
Fanny, Gay, Chastity, Minnie, Karen are probably out for good.

In the USA apparently Jemima is never used because it's seen as racist (don't know the whys and wherefores) But I think it's a beautiful name and would definitely consider it here - as long as I was sure I wouldn't move to the US.

It's the in-between generation names now that are off, although some of the ' old chic' ones like Elsie and Esme are so common now , they are being avoided.

Sheila
Claire
Sheene
Tracey
Paula
Lisa

Names that 55-75 year old have really.

Boys -

Paul
Mark
Richard
Terry
David
Wayne
Gary
Martin
Jonathan
Kevin

There's loads for boys isn't there?

The girls names, I haven't seen - except for Lisa.

But I know young versions (u15) or every one of those boys names other than Terry. Multiples of most of those. There are fewer names for boys in general, though, so makes sense they're back around.

I guess it depends on what you're exposed to where you live too

Minnie isn't.

I know two little girls who are sisters called Holly and Ivy. They didn’t think that went through.

Christmas babies by any chance? But a lot of people won't even be aware of the carol so it would mean nothing to them.

They aren’t but now you mention it.
I’ve never joined the dots myself. My cousins are called Holly and Eve. Some people eh

For all you know, it's quite deliberate. 🤷‍♀️

Hasn’t Stacey Dooley got a little girl called Minnie?

AuntChippy · 30/04/2026 17:05

I have friends who refer to their young daughters’ vulvas as ‘minnies’.

That comes from 'minge'.

Veronica

I really like this name; I love the sound and flow of it. But then, all my three DDs were given names with three syllables in full.

SinnerBoy · 01/05/2026 00:19

I know two Veronicas, both in their 50s and both known as Ronnny. I went to school with a Veronica Divers... don't think her parents thought her name through properly.

What's wrong with Veronica Divers.

Aunt Jemima was a long-lived brand of US pancake mix with a 'Mammy' stereotype character on the packaging and advertising. I think they only retired the branding in the last 20 years or so.

Well, me neither, but I do often wonder at the mentality on name threads, with people who are presumably adults, with the IQ necessary to be able to read and write and have access to the internet, posting stuff like 'Lana is 'anal' backwards!' like it's some kind of schoolyard gotcha.

AInightingale · 01/05/2026 10:46

Don't get it either, is it 'knicker divers'?! Who knows.

Agapornis · 01/05/2026 10:48

Veronica has been used in a recent teen drama (Riverdale based on the Archie comics, played by Camila Mendes) and has been consistently in the top 1000 since 1996. I think it's a great name, and popular with mainland European migrants too (as Weronika, people will switch to Veronica in next generations/the longer they've lived here). Same for Valentina.

Gay, Gayle and Gaynor would need a massive change in how gay people describe themselves, though I suppose it's only been used like that since the 1960s.

Crikey, that's a bit of a stretch, isn't it! 😅

Or Gaylord as a boy's name - absolutely unimaginable now.

I was born 1960 and a Susan. So many of us at school. I do not know any Susan's under 60.

I like Susan (tbf it's an old family name for us). I can see it coming back from the wilderness within the next 30 or so years..
