Trying to choose a name for an our baby girl due in a few weeks. We both like Ruby but not 100% set on it. Struggling to decide on any others that we both like! We don’t know any Rubys. Are there any negative connotations about the name that we’re missing?

Only that bloody annoying song but I like the name Ruby I have a 4 year and a 6 month old and haven't heard any Ruby's in classes or nursery ♡

blythet · 18/04/2026 09:50

congrats! I like it.

no negative connotations as such but the first thing I think of is the kaiser chiefs song. IMO that’s not a bad thing but youll probably hear it a lot

24Dogcuddler · 18/04/2026 09:51

It’s a lovely name. Do you have a middle name?

Thank you! I feel like I’ve said the name so many times now to try it out, I’m starting to question it! Middle name will be June after my grandmother

Yes I think we can definitely expect the association with the Kaiser Chiefs song! That don’t bother us too much though. That’s great to know there don’t seem to be many in school / nursery at the moment too

Ruby June is a beautiful name, congratulations

Tiredbarbie · 18/04/2026 10:02

Ruby was number 41 for girls in 2024 so it’s pretty common. I know loads. It’s a very lovely name that suits child and adult but do be aware that it will be very popular!

LiquidSquid · 18/04/2026 10:09

FizzleKick There's also an old country song 'Ruby don't take your love to town'.

It's probably area dependant as I know 5 Ruby's at our primary school (year 1-6)

I wouldn't personally use it due to how common it is around here. I do think it's a lovely name though. Easy to pronounce & spell.

The first name I thought of suggesting as an alternative was Delilah (so maybe I had names from songs in my head)Grin

Or how about Lily, Lucy or Hazel.

NamingNoNames · 18/04/2026 10:30

It's OK. How does it sound with the surname?

She'll probably get called Ru, Rube or Rubes.

It's popular for dogs here, but so are a lot of currently popular names.

How about Polly?

Calliopespa · 18/04/2026 14:27

I think Ruby had a moment a while back - girls now aged about 15-25. I know of several about 13 and a couple in their early twenties.

So you are probably safe on the overly common front I think.

I'm not a massive fan of the short, old lady names (don't mind things like Esmeralda or Constance!) so I'd probably suggest swapping out one of them for something a bit "frillier" but that's personal taste. Nothing fundamentally wrong with Ruby June.

LlynTegid · 18/04/2026 14:29

Not sure about Ruby June. Agree with having a middle name that remembers and/or celebrates a family member, so suggest thinking about another first name.

Middle names are not much used. Better to pick a first name you love that goes with the surname.

So what if Ruby June doesn't flow, Ruby Murray flows but I'd avoid using Ruby with that surname.

IeatPotNoodles · 18/04/2026 14:44

I love Ruby June!

DramaAlpaca · 18/04/2026 14:45

Ruby June is lovely.

MississippiCroc · 19/04/2026 16:06

Ruby is fine, there have been a lot of Ruby’s in the last 10+ years. At one point it seemed like it was up there with all the Siennas and Imogens.

I know a baby Ruby. There may not be any in your circle but she’ll grow up to work with about 50 colleagues called Ruby. And I say this as someone with a popular name, there was only two of us at school but now so many of my colleagues share my name.

Does it bother you having lots of colleagues with the same name?

My niece is a Ruby. She is 14 and gets called Booby Ruby at school. She hates it.

mum1345 · 19/04/2026 19:40

My daughter’s name is Ruby Jayne. She is 4 and we have known no other Rubys growing up in clubs/ pre school. But I guess depends on area as a few people will always say they Know looaads. Popularity was a huge factor when deciding her name as I know it was a top 10 name many years ago but so far it hasn’t been a problem and I do think it’s such a pretty, easy to spell name.

i do hear the name out and about, parks etc..
but I think it’s a really great name that grows with you so suits an adult just as much a child.

I think Ruby June sounds really sweet
good luck.

if it helps other names we liked were Autumn, Esme, Dottie, Belle, Fleur, Betsy, Rosa, Rumi, Alba

Norastroud · 19/04/2026 22:01

Ruby June is a gorgeous name! Great for all ages x

Treadcarefully11 · 19/04/2026 22:04

There’s a Ruby in my DS’s Reception class. She’s a lovely little girl and for that reason alone the name has positive connotations for me.

Spidey66 · 19/04/2026 22:08

It’s a lovely name x

Giraffehaver · 19/04/2026 22:25

Nothing negative about Ruby June. It's a fine name

LoudPlumDog · 20/04/2026 12:43

My granddaughter is Ruby, she’s 21 and absolutely loves her name!

FizzleKick · 22/04/2026 08:55

Thank you everyone for your input ☺️

I love the combination Ruby June, such a sweet sounding name. I think popularity must be area dependent because I don’t personally know any Ruby’s and I have children of various ages.
