Mabel Shirley
Violet Shirley-
Iris Shirley-

Shirley is the name of DH grandma who we both were close to.

I'm stuck between the three
Iris and Violet are family names
Mabel I just like the sound but in still torn between the three

Depends on the surname.
I like the meaningful middle name.

I prefer Iris to Violet but both are fine. Violet might get shortened to Vi.
I don't like Mabel.

Charlotte350 · 16/04/2026 10:50

Sure name is Hollingsworth

They all go with your surname, and are all lovely names. Mabel is really nice, and my personal preference.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 16/04/2026 10:53

I think Iris is the most overused out of your names. Maybe Mabel? The baby doesn’t need 2 family names so just go with the one you like
the sound of most.

Iris is the least overused of the 3.
Iris (61)
Mabel (37)
Violet (42)

There are quite a few May type names like and May, Mae, Maya, Maeve, which makes it seem a bit samey.

I don’t understand, you’ve said I’m wrong but then provided numbers that say I’m right?

Iris sounds like Isis and makes one think of eyeballs.
I love Mabel though

@ToKittyornottoKitty , the links show the popularity over nearly the past 30 years. Had OP suggested Olivia, I'd have added Olivia (1)

SnowFrogJelly · 16/04/2026 11:20

Violet

I see, didn’t realise they were links, and I don’t tend to click on random links in threads. Regardless, I wasn’t attempting to state absolute fact, especially not over 30(!!) years! Iris is the most overused of those names in my experience, there are at least 7 in my child’s primary school alone. I can’t vouch for everywhere

You can't really go by the ones you know, because you might be living somewhere with no Olivias but 3 Inayas or Annabelles in a class.

Annabelle isn't that popular (146) but because there names that are a bit similar to it, I'd have expected it to be in the top 40.

Of course I can, OP has asked for opinions on a discussion forum. She can google facts if she wants them, but I absolutely can share my own opinions here thanks. Also Isla is number 2 which is very similar to Iris

SoSadSoSadSoSad · 16/04/2026 12:23

Violet.

staringatthesun · 16/04/2026 12:39

We've quite a few little Violets locally. I love Mabel and Iris.

Pleasenotequila · 16/04/2026 12:39

Violet then Iris. Although I actually prefer Ivy to both and it doesn’t seem too popular yet

You are joking. Baby name explorer. It's in the top 5 and has been in the top 50 for 10 years.

Enrichetta · 16/04/2026 12:45

Definitely not Mabel.

Of the three Iris sounds nicest.

I don’t like Violet but love Violetta (Vee-o-letta….. like in la Traviata).

climbintheback · 16/04/2026 12:47

These old names are getting a bit boring

I LOVE Violetta - and also Viola as a more unusual choice.

But I particularly like Violetta.

Violet is my favourite of your three Op, but in recent months it seems to be mentioned on here constantly, and one combination a poster proposed did make me hear it as "revile" (Aurora Violet: Aurore Revile It) and I am now having difficulty unhearing it and the violent thing is more on my mind too.

For me Violetta has all the prettiness of the name (and the simply gorgeous little flower) but avoids those sounds.

It’s very popular! More so that violet or iris

Pleasenotequila · 16/04/2026 12:54

Wow! I had no idea Ivy was so popular! I have three kids in different schools and only know 1! I stand corrected.
