Really struggling with boys names. My partner loves Woody and I’m trying to get on board. I think it’s cute but I don’t LOVE it yet..
How do people feel about it??

we don’t know the gender yet! 😁

I know a Woody. He is 11 and it suits him perfectly-he has surfer boy longer hair and is outdoorsy and sporty. He has never had any issues with his name as far as I’m aware.i like it.

He sounds similar to the woody I know!

I know someone called woodie wood. There’s a woody in my daughter’s class as well. I don’t like it it’s quite twee

HyacinthsAndPeonies · 12/04/2026 07:16

So only comments that agree with you are constructive and the rest of us are double asterisks? Ok then.

I personally don't like nicknames as the given name. Fine as a cute diminutive of the given name whilst they're a baby/toddler, but nice for them to have a 'proper' name they can use once they're an adult/mature. I know three Woodys. One is in his 70s and it's a play on his surname, the other two are dogs.

My first thought was also that it's slang for an erection. I'm UK, 60s, and I've known this since I was a teen.

ThunderCatsHooo · 12/04/2026 07:17

Woody is a nickname for anyone with wood in their surname (woodman, woodward, woods etc), I can think of half a dozen woodys I've met over the years and none of them are called woody in real life. Give your child a proper name they can use professionally, they can have a daft nickname with their mates.

Goes against the grain for me, but then if he turns out to be chip off the old block with bushy hair, you could stick with it. It can be worth branching out occasionally.

Calm down dear.

I’m entitled to my opinion in the same way all the **s are 😏

Yeah, give him a name that means erection, teach him to call women bitches and to be so thin skinned that he asks for opinions and then hates on people who give him opinions. I’m sure he’ll grow up just fine.

Ljzjta · 12/04/2026 07:25

My son has a boy in his class called Woody. I was sceptical at first but he’s really cute and tbh they call his Woods, Woody etc. I don’t see an issue with it and it’s no worse than other names people use.

Wnsg · 12/04/2026 07:31

I have twin boys, now 14, one named Woody. I’ll be honest it was my husband’s choice and I really struggled with it in the beginning as I really wasn’t sure but as far as I know he has never been teased about his name and was often complimented on the name. I understand the worry about the references to Toy Story, erections etc but this really hasn’t affected him, but I do understand the reservations that some people have.

Twomunchkins2 · 12/04/2026 07:34

I would go for Edward or Howard on the birth certificate and use Woody as a diminutive.

Hate it.

coronafiona · 12/04/2026 07:43

No adult man needs to be publically associated with wood 🍆

SirChenjins · 12/04/2026 07:43

How about Stiffy or Boner if you like erection-themed names?

It's not a name I'd pick, but your bubba your choice 😊

loislovesstewie · 12/04/2026 07:44

Why are you asking for opinions if you only want people to agree with you?
FWIW, it's horrible. Perhaps call the next one Buzz, then Bo-Peep, then Slinky.

Ophir · 12/04/2026 07:46

Makes me think of Woody Guthrie.

I like it, don’t think it’s weird, perfectly ordinary name

Daisylove1 · 12/04/2026 07:51

There’s two in my daughter’s school- they don’t get any grief as far as I know.
it’s getting more popular so you should be fine

Lady1576 · 12/04/2026 07:58

Yes I think of the associations with Toy Story and erections too. But I also think of Woody Guthrie who was pretty cool. It sounds quite cute to me, yes a little twee but absolutely fine. I don‘t think other kids will tease him. I think that‘s really a relic of older times when everyone had more traditional names. I’m a teacher and now there are so many different names that children don‘t bat an eyelid at all.

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/04/2026 07:59

dotdotdotdash · 11/04/2026 23:22

It’s the name of the main character from Toy Story, it sounds childish and American. It’s a no from me.

Or Woody Woodpecker or the bird in Peanuts. Definitely a cartoon character.

yonem · 12/04/2026 08:05

And people will greet him by saying ‘Morning Woody’? It definitely means erection! Just because you haven’t heard of it doesn’t mean people won’t be laughing behind your/his back.

PissedOffAndStuck · 12/04/2026 08:06

I've heard of the erection slang but I also know a couple of Woodys and weirdly can't say I've ever made the connection in that context.

That said my family name at birth was also slang for the male appendage and I did get the piss taken a bit a school but it was largely in good humour and I survived!

Maybe Edward with Woody as a nickname from the get-go, just so he has options when he gets older if he wants them.

BiffandChip2 · 12/04/2026 08:07

My friend has a Woodrow - Woody for short. I thought it was silly but it seems to have grown on him 🤣

The bird in Peanuts is Woodstock - I don't think he's ever referred to as Woody.

Woody Guthrie was named Woodrow Wilson Guthrie after the future president. Woodrow Wilson's actual first name was Thomas. He was named Thomas Woodrow for his grandfather. It's one of those weird American things where a surname becomes a first name. Thomas is a much better name.
