Really struggling with boys names. My partner loves Woody and I’m trying to get on board. I think it’s cute but I don’t LOVE it yet..
How do people feel about it??

we don’t know the gender yet! 😁

What about Edward and Woody as a nickname.

Greenandyellowday · 11/04/2026 23:50

Woody from "Cheers", played by Woody Harrelson. Woody from "Toy Story".
Possible middle names: Sam, Norm, Frasier, Buzz, Jessie, Rex?

Im glad you’ve said this, I’ve NEVER heard it used for that before 😂 it’s a very cute name. Mumsnet just isn’t ready for it 😉

Thank you. We love his name. He totally suits his name and his friends don’t over think it. He just is Woody x

YouHaveAnArse · 11/04/2026 23:53

A name being cute is fine for a baby but most teenagers and adults don't want to be "cute".

Agree with those suggesting it as a nickname but not the official name.

Also not sure what "**s" are, but that's by the by

Wreckinball · 11/04/2026 23:55

the only woodys I know are both dogs

golla346 · 11/04/2026 23:55

I know a man named woody and he’s in his late 40s, I think it’s a good name op and something different

You are setting him up to constantly have people shouting ‘Andy’s Coming’

Again.. I have a woody and absolutely nobody has ever said Andy’s coming. Ffs. He’s 13 btw.

It’s a great name, was top of my list but my husband (sorry, DH) wasn’t keen so neither of my boy/boy twins got it but if we had another boy I’d fight for it. Sometimes people on here forget that you can be honest without being awful.

It's a nickname, not a proper name.
Can you imagine a 50 year old Woody?

I know one (well, he’s probably early 40’s). Totally fine. Sensible scientist type. It isn’t his actual given name but he’s known by it professionally and colloquially too. Email address etc.

Ruthietuthie · 12/04/2026 00:06

The Woody I know is actually called James. But has always been known as Woody. He is in his 70s now.
We are in the US. It is a rare but not unheard of nickname here, but I've never met anyone whose given name was Woody.

THIS! Constructive and helpful opinions are always welcome.

(also love that you will fight for the name next time if it’s what you want!)

I can, I actually live beside him 😁

It's a nickname

I did want Beauchamp but my dh was dead against that so Woodward was my small win. My dh loves the name woody x

Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE our sons’ names but would definitely push if we had a third boy. Also congratulations!!

Apparently, linking to Urban Dictionary's entry for "woody in my sweats" ("sweats" referring to jogging trousers (aka sweatpants)) gets your post hidden.

"Woody" is definitely a slang term for erection. Please don't do this to your son.

Posters aren't "**s", whatever the asterisks stand for, for telling you that your son will face every kind of hell in the schoolyard if you name him Woody.

barkygoldie · 11/04/2026 23:22

I think it’s silly, I’m sorry. Toy Story.

I agree
if it was twins you could have buzz and woody or woody and the female cowgirl toy can’t think of her name
the new film comes out this year too so at least there would be plenty of Toy Story merchandise like buzz and woody costume baby grows 🤣

EatAllDay · 12/04/2026 00:19

Hate it. Sorry

StrictlyCoffee · 12/04/2026 00:21

Not keen, as others have said it’s Zoe Ball
and Norman Cook’s sons name though

LassiKopiano24 · 12/04/2026 00:23

I actually don’t mind it, I’ve heard worse

Woody Harrelson?

TempNameForObviousReasons · 12/04/2026 00:24

AmberSpy · 11/04/2026 23:24

I'm sure I've heard woody used as slang for an erection... It's an absolutely dreadful name, sorry.

Yep. The first thing that comes to mind when I hear Woody is an erect penis.

Please give your baby a different name.

Thisisnotadrillwakeup · 12/04/2026 00:25

You seem upset people don’t like it. However the majority of people will judge your child for the name you choose - at least you know the usual sentiment in advance.

Famous compatriots include:

  • Woody Woodpecker
  • Woody Allen
  • Woody Guthrie
  • Woody the Cowboy (Toy Story)

My objection to it - is that I can’t imagine someone with a professional job with that name. You do you though…. Glad you asked.

AllFours · 12/04/2026 00:27

Cute nickname, but definitely a common-place euphemism for an erection!
