Honest opinions and fresh baby girl name suggestions

Hi all,

I’m hoping for some fresh eyes as I think I’ve stared at names too long and lost all objectivity 😅

We’re expecting a baby girl and are trying to find something that feels right for us. We’re both a bit non-traditional, into indie music and nature, so we’re drawn to names that feel earthy, a bit creative, maybe slightly whimsical but not too out-there.

Names I like (he’s not as keen):

  • Olive
  • Cleo
  • Fern
  • Nell
  • Ember
  • Tawny
  • Stevie
  • Wren

Names he likes (I’m not convinced):

  • Willow (I do like but seems way too popular?)
  • Juniper
  • Melody
  • Elizabeth
  • Ramona
  • Saffron

Names we both like:

  • Hazel
  • Violet
  • Billie (but worried about Eilish)
  • Harmony

Names we love but can’t use because ex partners / close friends:

  • Rowan
  • Frankie
  • Charlie
  • Robyn

I just don’t want anything too frilly, overly traditional, or super common. Equally, he doesn’t want something that feels try-hard or like a “stage name”.

Would really appreciate honest opinions on the above (what works / what doesn’t), and suggestions with a similar vibe that we might have missed

Looking just at the names you both like, I'm going to go against the grain here and put a vote in for Harmony. I might be biased because it reminds me of one of my favourite books as a kid, The Queen's Nose, but I think it's quite pretty.

Hazel and Violet are both top 100 names if that bothers you.

Some other suggestions:
Lorna
Alba
Willa as an alternative to Willow?
Seren
Anya
Coral
Sunny
Veronica
Ione
Carmen
Josie
Fleur
Skye
Meris
Helena
Ffion
Aubrey
Maxine
Lacey
Marley
Sydney

What made you think of the Mitford sisters? 🤣

Giraffehaver · 09/04/2026 22:37

My favourite flower name is Zinnia. From your lists I like Hazel and Fern best

GalaxyStarsMoon · 10/04/2026 07:57

I don’t like Hazel, Violet, Wren or Olive at all. And they’re all fairly popular (I work with children).

Love love Cleo and Melody. Please not Tawny, I mean, it’s an owl. And also it’s too much of a Brownies reference.

Winter?
Calliope?

Tawny Owl or Tawny Port. Too close to Toni.

It DOES sound like Toni in an accent!

HollyGolightly4 · 09/04/2026 21:16

I thought that too! Really not the family that springs to mind for me with the brief of "earthy"!

17caterpillars1mouse · 10/04/2026 16:42

I feel like Eden maybe fits your vibe

Other suggestions

Iris
Fleur
River
Elle
Lois

Well, yes, a couple of them turned out to be fascists, but their childhood was very earthy - quite feral actually, with their own language, ranging around the countryside, untamed. Plus Debbo was an amazing gardener and an expert chicken keeper - so very earthy. Perhaps Debs would be a good name, actually.

MsSmartShoes · 10/04/2026 17:23

I like:
Nell
Stevie
Elizabeth
(Tawny is truly awful).

Do I spot a fellow Katherine Ryan fan? ;)
I also love Fenna but came to suggest Juno

WhatNextImScared · 10/04/2026 20:51

Hazel and Violent are both lovely. Cleo is great - it was on my list but unused!

PersephonePomegranate · 10/04/2026 21:00

RS1987 · 09/04/2026 17:08

I also love the myth names - Circe, Hero, Hera, Jocasta

Jocasta?! That's a myth I'd want to avoid my kid being associated with!

RubyWinehouse · 10/04/2026 21:10

Paisley
Nyree
Oakleigh

CPNSBH · 10/04/2026 21:11

Billie is lovely, I don’t think people will jump to Elish, if I were having a baby girl my name list would be..
Nina
Rachel
Natalie
Cathy
Kate
Joanna
Anne
Madeline
Simone
Mary.
Also I know a little girl called Autumn with a summer birthday, I don’t think that’s strange.

Whydontyoucarryon · 10/04/2026 21:14

Meriel
Sylvia

SunnyOrca · 10/04/2026 21:19

My friend just had a Juniper and everyone is in love with her name, it's so gorgeous to say as a whole but the nicknames are equally as lovely- Junie, Juno, June, Juju.....
Have you considered Rhapsody? Rhaps for short?

golddiamond · 10/04/2026 21:35

My friends GD is called Moss. Worth a thought.

Nell is great - I really don’t like his names at all. Violet is the nicest of the joint ones.
