Honest opinions and fresh baby girl name suggestions

Hi all,

I’m hoping for some fresh eyes as I think I’ve stared at names too long and lost all objectivity 😅

We’re expecting a baby girl and are trying to find something that feels right for us. We’re both a bit non-traditional, into indie music and nature, so we’re drawn to names that feel earthy, a bit creative, maybe slightly whimsical but not too out-there.

Names I like (he’s not as keen):

  • Olive
  • Cleo
  • Fern
  • Nell
  • Ember
  • Tawny
  • Stevie
  • Wren

Names he likes (I’m not convinced):

  • Willow (I do like but seems way too popular?)
  • Juniper
  • Melody
  • Elizabeth
  • Ramona
  • Saffron

Names we both like:

  • Hazel
  • Violet
  • Billie (but worried about Eilish)
  • Harmony

Names we love but can’t use because ex partners / close friends:

  • Rowan
  • Frankie
  • Charlie
  • Robyn

I just don’t want anything too frilly, overly traditional, or super common. Equally, he doesn’t want something that feels try-hard or like a “stage name”.

Would really appreciate honest opinions on the above (what works / what doesn’t), and suggestions with a similar vibe that we might have missed

Stella
Aurora
Summer
Violet
Heather
Daisy
Wren
Hera
Juno
Bridget
Lyra
Emerald

I like Ember - she could be Emmy for short.

Moveoverdarlin · 09/04/2026 17:23

Love Fern and Cleo. Hazel, Olive and Wren are awful in my opinion.

BoleynMemories13 · 09/04/2026 17:23

Hazel is lovely and seems to fit what you're looking for.

Violet is perhaps a little too popular now for your liking, as there are lots of little violets around.

Harmony would fit into the 'stage name' category for me, which you say he wants to avoid? I really dislike this.

Billie isn't for me at all

I'm not going to comment on your other lists, although I do like some of them, as they're obviously not the one if one of you isn't keen or you can't use them for whatever reason.

Suggestions that seem to be your style:-
Iris
Eden
Coral
River
Rose
May
April
Summer
Skye
Savannah
Clementine
Piper
Quinn
Honey
Pearl
Sapphire

Hazel & AUTUMN are the best choices

Ooh Honey and Pearl are lovely!

Although, I’m Scottish so could never really use the name as it sounds like ‘Per-rill’ in my accent 😂

It seems like the two of you might have a meeting of tastes on nature names and specifically on botanical/plant names - trees, bushes, vines, flowers, herbs? Of course you have other options, but maybe look at some more botanicals to see if you find "the one"?

A few others to consider, staying away from the super-popular-right-now:

Ash
Aspen
Bay
Briar
Briony/Bryony
Calanthe
Dahlia/Dalia
Daphne
Ianthe
Ione
Laurel
Liana
Lilac
Linden
Linnéa
Mace
Nyssa
Rosalie
Sage
Veronica
Vinca

Lomonald · 09/04/2026 17:37

I love Hazel and Nell, would you call her Helen and shorten or just Nell either is lovely.

Ipollita · 09/04/2026 17:38

Maren
Cora
Blair
Noa
Luna
Briar
Zara
Sage

Mumofgirls2017 · 09/04/2026 17:41

I like most of both your choices but only one I like you both like is Hazel. Suggestions-

daphne
eloise
clover
juno
romy
stella
margot
rosa
joni
hallie
dorothy
cora
helena
audrey
beatrix

JustGiveMeReason · 09/04/2026 17:47

I don't like any from your list.

I like Elizabeth from his. I like it a lot, but it seems very different from all the other choices in your OP.

From the joint list, I only like Hazel.
Seems to fit the 'vibe' you both like - the whole 'nature word' thing, but is a recognised name and easy to spell / pronounce (as indeed most of your lists are). So I guess it is just personal taste.

MyBunnyLullaby · 09/04/2026 17:51

How about Viola. I think its an eastern european name and cuter than Violet..

NamingNoNames · 09/04/2026 17:53

Keep:
Cleo - ok. It's a bit like a cat's name.
Fern - ok but Ferne and Fearne spellings not ok.
Nell - great. Don't like Nelly/Nellie
Elizabeth - love but don't like Eliza, Libby or Beth. Lizzie is great, Lisa ok, Bet/Betty/Betsy ok.
Willow - not my taste but I can see the appeal
Hazel - not my taste but I can see the appeal
Ramona - Outnumbered
Billie - like but a bit 'we wanted a boy'. Billie Eilish/Piper.
Stevie - like, Stevie Nicks

Ditch:
Olive - love the fruit, don't like the name. Olivia overused
Juniper - love gin, don't like the name
Violet - worked with one so not keen
Saffron - no, too spicy and Ab Fab
Ember - dreadful
Tawny - dreadful
Wren - dreadful
Harmony - Captain Scarlet
Melody- Captain Scarlet

Shakespearean name. Wiola is 'vee-O-la'. Think it might get said as Viler, as might Violet.

Oh, didn't know that. The Viola I know is polish

BewareoftheLambs · 09/04/2026 17:58

Violet, Hazel and Fern are pretty from your lists. You could also consider Sylvie, Edith, Lyra or Artemis. I wouldn't personally use Tawny or Ember.

Same here. She's Wiola. The shakespearean character is in Twelfth Night, as are Sebastian and Olivia (and Toby, Andrew and Maria)

darkrainysunshine · 09/04/2026 18:02

Hazel is nice but becoming very popular and I think will date. It also sounds absolutely awful in some accents.

I don’t like Ramona at all: just sounds like moan.

NamingNoNames · 09/04/2026 18:04

How about Heather?

Elthammummy · 09/04/2026 18:08

Marnie?

mumofoneAloneandwell · 09/04/2026 18:09

I love Hazel.

Aurelia
Noa
Beatrix
Carys
Tess
Joni

ThatWhiteElephant · 09/04/2026 18:25

From your lists, I love Stevie, Nell and then Wren.

Cyclingforcake · 09/04/2026 18:26

I like Fern and Hazel. Olive, Willow and Wren are currently quite popular in our corner of Yorkshire. Nell is cute but would normally be short for Eleanor/Helena.

rockinrobins · 09/04/2026 18:29

You've got a list of 4 names you both like which is great!

Honestly, just scratch the rest and choose from that list of 4 when she is born.
