Hi all,

I’m hoping for some fresh eyes as I think I’ve stared at names too long and lost all objectivity 😅

We’re expecting a baby girl and are trying to find something that feels right for us. We’re both a bit non-traditional, into indie music and nature, so we’re drawn to names that feel earthy, a bit creative, maybe slightly whimsical but not too out-there.

Names I like (he’s not as keen):

  • Olive
  • Cleo
  • Fern
  • Nell
  • Ember
  • Tawny
  • Stevie
  • Wren

Names he likes (I’m not convinced):

  • Willow (I do like but seems way too popular?)
  • Juniper
  • Melody
  • Elizabeth
  • Ramona
  • Saffron

Names we both like:

  • Hazel
  • Violet
  • Billie (but worried about Eilish)
  • Harmony

Names we love but can’t use because ex partners / close friends:

  • Rowan
  • Frankie
  • Charlie
  • Robyn

I just don’t want anything too frilly, overly traditional, or super common. Equally, he doesn’t want something that feels try-hard or like a “stage name”.

Would really appreciate honest opinions on the above (what works / what doesn’t), and suggestions with a similar vibe that we might have missed

Olive, Cleo or Wren are all lovely choices.

easterholsfinally · 09/04/2026 18:45

Why don’t you want to see what hair / eye colour your child has? I think hazel is beautiful but if the child is blonde hair blue eyes not sure it suits.

Only one I dislike is wren - due to Wren kitchens.

but you have to decide what suits at the time.

Im sure you will pick the most perfect name for your baby - enjoy :-)

Oh, we like Autumn as well… although she’ll be a summer baby

I went to school with an Autumn born in February, and a Tuesday, born on a Saturday. No one said she has to be an Autumn baby.

A baby named Forest or River doesn't mean they were born in one, or next to one.
Would you consider Summer?

Out of your names, Nell, Violet and Melody.

Not on your list Gail, Astrid

Just so you know, no one owns a name, just because a friend has a child named that doesn't mean you can't use it.
DP is 9 years older than his cousin, who has the same name as him! MIL and the cousin mum, loved the name and they held family values on there individual sides.

hattie43 · 09/04/2026 18:49

Summer

Bunnyofhope · 09/04/2026 18:51

I like Fern Juniper, Saffron, Hazel.

Mosaic80 · 09/04/2026 18:58

Cleo is my favourite from your lists. I so want to like hazel but just don’t for some reason!

Merryn and Zoe also spring to mind, randomly.

Princessfluffy · 09/04/2026 19:00

Opal
Peridot
Carnelia
Garnet
Onyx

Madthings · 09/04/2026 19:03

Juniper, Wren, Hazel, Robin, Billie were names I loved. My youngest would have been Juniper if he had been a girl.

My daughter is called Merryn. Unusual but not out there.

Also liked Meredith, Margot, Bonnie.

Madthings · 09/04/2026 19:04

Oh and Astrid and Eden.

permanently · 09/04/2026 19:09

Dulce?

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 09/04/2026 19:12

The first name that came to mind was Willow.
From the names you both like I would go with Hazel. I don’t know any young Hazels at all.

Amiacoolorwarmcolour · 09/04/2026 19:13

I really dislike Billie. Billy is bad enough for a boy, awful for a girl.

AgathaHoccleve · 09/04/2026 19:16

Nell is the best from your list. He has awful taste, sorry.

mummysmagicmedicine · 09/04/2026 19:21

Marnie came to mind!

Elowen
Indie
Indigo
Harley
Harlow
Marley
Blake
Olympia
Lydia
Iris
Penelope
Lyra
Ottilie
Verity

Whatnameisif · 09/04/2026 19:29

I love Fern, Ramona and Hazel.
I wouldn't use Olive if you're worried about popularity, I know loads of them, it's a top 50 name.

Names on my list which might meet your remit -
Sylvie
Fay
Daphne
Delphine
Aida (Eye-ee-dah)
Amaryllis
Calypso
Bunty
Delia
Estella
Elektra
Goldie
Nadine
Heather
Julissa
Winter
Zelda
Morwenna
Demelza

fyooshia · 09/04/2026 19:32

Eric(k)a- is a name for Heather so fits your plant/nature theme but is also a little more out there/indie.
I personally prefer it spelled Erika, but the plant would be Erica.

Also like Hazel, Ramona, Vida, Summer, Indi, from upthread

Hohofortherobbers · 09/04/2026 19:37

Hazel or Summer

NamingNoNames · 09/04/2026 19:38

Erica/Erika - is a name for heather so fits your plant/nature theme and has a boyish vibe like Billie and Stevie.

I prefer Erika too - seems more scandi.

mixingplaydoh · 09/04/2026 19:44

I love Laurel, as suggested by another poster.

citreous · 09/04/2026 19:45

Sorrel?

I love Cleo.

Calliopespa · 09/04/2026 19:56

MyBunnyLullaby · 09/04/2026 17:51

How about Viola. I think its an eastern european name and cuter than Violet..

I like Viola as Violet is getting very popular.

Similarly, Olive is very modish atm OP, so not sure it has the "freshness" you want.

I like Hazel best.

Tawny really doesn't work I don't think. Tawny has often been used as a skin colour descriptor and I just don't think it sits well as a name.

Calliopespa · 09/04/2026 19:57

Briar?

NamingNoNames · 09/04/2026 20:00

Tawny Owl or Tawny Port. Too close to Toni.

RealMember · 09/04/2026 20:18

Doris

Peanutlicious · 09/04/2026 20:18

I like Melody, Fern and Violet best.
