Middle name for Aurora?

EllieFox11 · 03/04/2026 21:30

Hello!

Pregnant with our first baby girl due in May!!

We have decided to call her Aurora. My husband is Italian and it’s his grandmothers name so we love it.

We just need to decide on a middle name…

The names we have are:

Aurora Imogen
Aurora Violet

Which one do you think flows better? We adore them both so we are hoping for some opinions to help us decide?

Any alternative suggestions are welcome.

TYIA❤️

@EllieFox11 , Aurora Esma will sound like Oh roarer resmy.

Aurora Violet sounds like a naff paint colour or scented candle.

Are you saying the name the UK way or the Italian way?

We like Aurora Esme too

That’s really pretty! I’d choose that over the previous options

I do like Primrose, but I think save it for another little girl!

Aurora already has a kind of princessy vibe (after Sleeping Beauty) and Primrose is a bit fairy princess so I think together it gets all a bit too "Disney."

I really liked your suggestion of Genevieve, which is a pretty name too, but a bit more sober and grown up.

MovedlikeHarlowinMonteCarlo · 05/04/2026 13:21

Aurora Violet but I think one syllable would go better.

Whilst you don't have to have one, it is best to. Most kids will reach an age where they wonder why they don't have one and not be happy about that. I have an unusual first name and surname but no middle name, it still bothers me sometimes, especially since my DB has one.

Why?! My mum doesn’t have one, my sister and I don’t have middle names, my husband and sister don’t have them and neither do our adult niece and nephew or our 14 year old son! Not one of us is arsed! Unless a middle name is in tribute to a relative for whatever reason a middle name is just pointless filler!

They tend to seem like a middle name for the sake of one. Why bother?

You don’t have to have a middle name. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Me and my brother shared the same initial, so it helped that he had a middle initial to use in correspondence.
It also helps if you dislike your given name.
I wasn't given one. 🤷

It saved many an envelope being opened in error back in the old days 🧓

If a son gets one and a daughter doesn't it can feel like favouritism or some kind of old fashioned sexism. DH and bro have them and neither of his sisters do. My bro had one and I don't. We are women in our 60s, it was definitely sexism/form of unconscious bias.

If you ever work in the US, having only 2 initials is pretty rare and will cause constant comment.

I personally did want one/feel the absence of a middle name as a child. The saving grace is having a slightly unusual first name and a really out there surname that I chose to keep when I married

StationJack · 05/04/2026 13:41

My (older) sibling has one and I don't. Didn't care and still don't.

I have 4 cousins, all the same sex, the two eldest don't have middle names, the younger ones both do.

I always feel a bit sad for people who don’t have middle names - like their parents just couldn’t be bothered naming them properly. My friend’s husband has no middle name and both first and last name are short, one syllable names, and both are very common. It really does feel a bit phoned in on the naming front.

A middle name reduces the chance of you having the exact same name as someone else which is helpful for practical reasons (like my colleague’s husband who got debt letters for another person with the same first and last name and first initial middle name!) but also for your sense of individuality.

StationJack · 05/04/2026 14:11

I always feel a bit sad for people who don’t have middle names - you need to get a life.

My name is a one-off. I can't see there would be a benefit to having a middle name other than I might have wanted to use it as my known as name.

A filler middle name doesn't much reduce the chances of having a namesake.

You are showing a lack of empathy that isn't very respectful.

Have you eaten too many Easter eggs or something? Some random person said she felt sorry for people without a middle name. We don't need her pity. My name's fine.

I don't see that it would be improved by having a middle name and going by my friends' middle names it would probably be a filler middle name like Jane, Anne or Louise anyway.

Luckyingame · 05/04/2026 16:28

Okay, how about Aurora May?
That would work for me. ❤️

crumpet · 05/04/2026 16:29

A one syllable middle name, not starting with a vowel, would flow better.
