Drew for a girl?

I love the name Drew for a baby girl but I have concerns with it being seen as more of a boy name? I live in the UK and it appears to be more common as a boy name in the UK. Thoughts?

I know one boy called Drew only. I really like it for a girl.

puddingandsun · 29/03/2026 21:43

Love it.

ChocolateCinderToffee · 29/03/2026 21:52

Er, no. Unless you are calling her Drusilla and shortening it to Dru.

In Scotland (mainly) it's short for Andrew. You could call her Andrea?

Vartden · 29/03/2026 21:55

Thats short for Andrew.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 29/03/2026 22:01

Drew Barrymore seems to have worked out ok for her.

villamariavintrapp · 29/03/2026 22:07

I think the problem is Drew is very much a boy's name, except for Drew Barrymore, a very famous girl well known for her 'unique' (boy's) name. If you copy it, then it's not 'unique' or surprising, you've just copied an obvious celebrity name.. so I don't like it. And it's sexist unless you would equally happily use a traditionally feminine 'girl's' name for a baby boy?

LastHotel · 29/03/2026 22:22

It’s a boy name short for Andrew. Drew Barrymore is a famous exception, but she’s American and has celebrity parents and is a celebrity herself. That’s very different.

Prue? - Prunella, Prudence?

lemoncurdcupcake · 29/03/2026 22:22

OMG I asked myself this exact question earlier today! That's kinda spooky. We don't know what gender we're expecting and Drew is on my boys shortlist, but then saw a clip of Drew Barrymore and thought hang on, Drew could be for either.

I like it :) Yes it will very likely be seen as more of a boys name, but it's not like that hasn't happened before in history. Ashley, Lesley, Kelly I think were all originally boys names but have become more associated with girls over time.

I know Drew Barrymore is a Drew, but I would never call a girl that.

Same as Cameron Diaz. She is a woman, but I would never call a girl Cameron.

Drew, and Cameron are boys names IMO.

I only know 2, one in the UK and one in Australia and both are men. Its not awful for a woman, but the only one I know is Barrymore.

user1492757084 · 30/03/2026 00:00

For a girl, I prefer Prudence, Prunella, Drucilla and Priscilla.

Drew is a surname and short for Andrew.
Drew Barrymore's parents are the only people I know of who used Drew for a girl.

JMSA · 30/03/2026 00:10

I’ve never liked the name, for either sex.

CurlewKate · 30/03/2026 00:16

So long as your next child is a boy and you name him Eva…

Marcipex · 30/03/2026 00:20

I only know a male Drew. He’s called Drool, even by his own family.

RogueFemale · 30/03/2026 00:24

Regardless of boy/girl, I don't think it's a very attractive sounding name - Jroo.

SnowFrogJelly · 30/03/2026 00:55

Noooooo

StationJack · 30/03/2026 14:10

I know a girl called Drew.

FatLarrysBanned · 30/03/2026 14:15

I worked with a lady called Drew. She was of Greek heritage and her full name was Androulla, but she went by Drew.

StationJack · 30/03/2026 14:19

I know an Androula too but she's Andy.

StretchedMoomin · 30/03/2026 14:19

Definitely more of a boy's name, even if it is rare. Could you use it as a nickname for Audrey, Adrienne, Deirdre or something alike?
Or maybe a name beginning with D and a stressed RU sound in the middle name? Like Dahlia Ruth?

Calliopespa · 31/03/2026 11:17

I'm less inclined than others to feel it is not a unisex name op - mostly as the vibes for me are feminine because of Drew Barrymore and also the Nancy Drew stories I enjoyed reading as a child. I know one who would be in her 60s now (I guess Drew Barrymore can't be all that far off 60??) and it was short for Andrea.

I don't know any male Drews, and would, personally, find it possibly a bit feminine, so we all have different takes on it.

I think it's a bit like Billie or Stevie - though for me those lean towards being used as boy names more than Drew does.

StationJack · 31/03/2026 14:36

The Drew in Nancy Drew is a surname. Drew Barrymore got her father's middle name as a first name.
It's a boy's name given to girls occasionally.

madcatters · 31/03/2026 14:50

There was a girl Drew in DD’s primary class 20 years ago. I like it.

StationJack · 31/03/2026 14:53

Drew - darkgreener.

Yes it is a surname, but I still associate it with a girl - mostly because I have never come across a male Drew.
