Unusual but not wacky girls names?

Trying to compile a list of girls’ names… I tend to like names which aren’t too common, I work in a school so unfortunately associate a lot of more popular or commonly used names with our pupils. I don’t want anything too crazy but would be interested to hear of any names which people love but don’t hear often?
For example, I really like the name Rumer, as in the children’s author Rumer Godden, but my husband hates it as associates it with “rumour” - which I get. I just liked that it’s different and I don’t know of anyone called Rumer!

I'm biased as it's DD's name, but I think Juno is really lovely - simple and strong, but elegant at the same time.

Shatandfattered · 30/03/2026 09:26

My name is Stephanie and I was an 89 child and I've spent my entire life being called a fanny lol.

daysofpearlyspencer · 30/03/2026 09:26

Only ever met one Verily

Leavesandthings · 30/03/2026 09:51

Hester
Erica
Paula
Katrina
Michelle

I think the way to go is established names that aren't currently fashionable. Consonants are good these days, if you want to be different to all the Lia/Mia/Aya etc!

I honestly think the 70s names are due a comeback:
Sarah
Rachel
Elizabeth
Clare
Joanna
Stephanie
Louise
Hazel
Laura
Lauren
Catherine

All lovely names you don't hear anymore

I was going to call my son Laura in 1998 ( if he was a girl of course)

Isn't one of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis's daughters a Rumer?

Yup, and their other daughter is Scout after the little girl in Harper Lee's To Kill A Mockingbird, which is also very cool.

I think Blythe is also a great name, and very under-used just now.

Zillah
demelza
Alegria (joy in Spanish)

My little girl (15 in April) is called Cleo. We have only met one other, but the other was Cleopatra, ours is just Cleo. Beautiful name, but there was an Australian kids series call H2O where a girl was called Cleo abd kids a few years below her shouted Cleo in an Aussie accent!

Hanjan51 · 30/03/2026 10:53

My name is Dinah. It's old english, biblical and the cat in Alice in Wonderland. It is not a made up one. There's certainly not many of us. I love it.
It is said as "Di Nah" (similar to Diner) and not "Dena"

StationJack · 30/03/2026 11:22

Bronte ~ it's a beautiful, unusual name, really suited her and everyone knows how to spell it It's dreadful.
Blaire - would suit a loud child.

I have a Juno too! The only thing is people on the phone tend to assume it's a boy (Drs etc) but that doesn't really bother me.

I also have a Stella which I think is lovely and we haven't met another one although a few people have said it's their grannies or cats name 😂 but she get lots of compliments especially on the continent

I love Stella. I was going to suggest it but thought it is probably quite a mainstream name. On my very short list if we'd had girls.

How about Morven? A beautiful Scottish name. I love it

I’ve always loved this. I had school friends called Morven and Shona - beautiful names!

I like Sorrel and Twyla.

One of my friends has a daughter called Sorrel. Her other daughter's are called Honey and Gala, and she has two boys called Orlando and Prosper. They are all lovely young adults.

jonahpops · 30/03/2026 19:24

We always liked Juno but felt in the end it didn’t quite fit with our surname.

Ooh I love this name. Like the "Adventure" series by Enid Blyton.

How about Cecily, Opal, Ramona, Tamsin or Bianca?

My friend has a little Samantha. She gets Sam/Sammy, too. I haven't heard of another child with that name but it really suits her. Reminds me of the blonde witch who would wiggle her nose, Bewitched? I only know of one adult (late 20s) with it.
