Posting for a friend who is Welsh but lives in England at the moment.

Tesni Ffion
Tesni Mai
Mabli Mai
Mabli Elen

Or so people have other favourite Welsh names?

Tesni Ffion 100%

No I don't.
The only Cariads I know are Welsh, so it's possible your opinion is your opinion rather than actually being fact.

My opinion and fact.

It is even worse than Precious.

spiderlight · 26/03/2026 12:15

Mabli Mai sounds a bit too much like the name of an S4C cartoon for toddlers, and I started to read Tesni as Tesla, but I love Mabli (and Mali), Elen and Ffion. Ffion Mai flows quite nicely. I also love Cadi, Catrin, Carys and Alys.

Oh, yes, but that's not pronounced at all like Ffion. It's a nasalised single syllable, for a start!

While that's true, someone French would pronounce both words the same.

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 12:31

They probably wouldn't, @sixsept , they'd say it as Fee-on.

I speak good French and can’t think of any French term for anus or arse that at all resembles Ffion.

it’s the slang word ‘fion’ - having checked with a couple of French friends this is not something you want to be shouting across a playground…

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 13:08

The OP's friend " is Welsh but lives in England at the moment".
Ffion would be a middle name.

Yes, we've established this up the thread, but it's not pronounced at all similarly.

@VividDeer , Tesni. It is the Welsh word for apricity.

Edited

I did look it up and it's a nice 17thC word, but let's not pretend apricity is a thing.

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 13:19

@pinkdelight , tesni is definitely a thing.

HamSandwichKiller · 26/03/2026 13:20

Not Mabli Mai it's twee somehow. I like Eira for a girl, though the pronunciation could be tricky.

@Mulledjuice , It's Mabel May

@Overtheatlantic , Mably (like Madly but with a b). Carys, Bronwen and Anwen are really dated.

@TheClangyClunk , Tesney

@binnibonnieboo , like English 'my'.

@garlictwist , I don't think they're ugly but I think a lot of them sound ugly anglicised.

Yes, I know the second syllable is 'ee', but is the s hard or soft? Tess-nee or Tes-nee?

I only like the first one, but I suspect people will pronounce it both ways.

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 13:29

@TheClangyClunk , the stress is on the first syllable. (cf Andy is AN-dy, not an-dee)

I say it like the s in Sam or Chelsea not like the s in cheese or Teresa.

TES like in Tesco. Ni like the ney in kidney.

I'm referring to the apricity line. It's like saying: "It's the Welsh word for xxyxyxz." Elucidating a Welsh word by mentioning an English word no one knows or uses.

Enko · 26/03/2026 13:37

Tesni Ffion. Sounds lovely.

My favourite welsh girls name is Nia

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 13:37

@pinkdelight , don't blame me for your limited vocabulary. Smile

Thanks! I love learning about names that are new to me. The Welsh names that come up on these boards are so often lovely.

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 13:57

@TheClangyClunk , there are lots of lovely Welsh names but the threads on here usually only seem to mention the same ones again and again, and they're often dated or noun names.

dailyconniptions · 26/03/2026 13:59

Tesni Ffion is gorgeous. I've never liked Mabli as it just reminds me of 'wobbly'.

dailyconniptions · 26/03/2026 14:09

Nia is a great suggestion too.

Mabli Mai is adorable ❤️

HugHog · 26/03/2026 14:17

Mabli Mai reminds me of Mae Mobley in The Help. I think Elen and Ffion are prettier than the other names here, but that's as someone who doesn't speak Welsh.

pinkdelight · 26/03/2026 14:18

Like I said, I looked it up. It's a nice word. If that poster had said "Tesni means the warmth of the sun in winter" I wouldn't have batted an eye. But it's a bit daft to explain it means a word no one knows except the ghost of Samuel Johnson.

Gwenhwyfar · 26/03/2026 14:22

sixsept · 26/03/2026 10:23

I googled it and it's "fion".

Can't say I've ever come across it before though (I speak good French too but may be lacking in slang knowledge!)

Same. And I live in a French-speaking country!
