Tesni Ffion or Mabli Mai

103 replies

RoseApp · 25/03/2026 21:01

Posting for a friend who is Welsh but lives in England at the moment.

Tesni Ffion
Tesni Mai
Mabli Mai
Mabli Elen

Or so people have other favourite Welsh names?

I can say this because I am Welsh but so many Welsh names are very ugly. I would avoid. Mabli at a push.

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 09:55

@Mulledjuice , It's Mabel May

@Overtheatlantic , Mably (like Madly but with a b). Carys, Bronwen and Anwen are really dated.

@TheClangyClunk , Tesney

@binnibonnieboo , like English 'my'.

@garlictwist , I don't think they're ugly but I think a lot of them sound ugly anglicised.

I have a Carys in England which is always pronounced right. My original first choice was Ffion but it is pronounced the same as anus/arse in French so I ruled that out given we travel to France a bit!

I speak good French and can’t think of any French term for anus or arse that at all resembles Ffion.

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 10:01

@RoseApp , I don't like Mai as a middle name, it's overused by the Welsh and is twee. Mair is so much nicer. (Mair is the Welsh form of Mary/Maria is like Myra without the -a).
I prefer Mali (Molly and pronounced 'mally') to Mabli.
I prefer Elin to Elen.

Tesni Ffion - ok
Mabli Elen - ok

They're both ok but I'd try them out Starbucks style. I don't love them.

I know! And I love Mabli but not Mabli Mai.

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 10:05

@Mulledjuice , Mabel May is awful. Smile
I don't dislike Mabli but there are many nicer names.

PrincessOfPreschool · 26/03/2026 10:05

I think Tesni Ffion sounds like the coating on a non stick frying pan!! I think Tesni alone is fine and Ffion alone is fine too.

Footle · 26/03/2026 10:09

@RoughGuide, yes, trying hard but can’t think of French word for arse that sounds like Ffion. Watching this space to find out.

I speak good French and can’t think of any French term for anus or arse that at all resembles Ffion.

I googled it and it's "fion".

Can't say I've ever come across it before though (I speak good French too but may be lacking in slang knowledge!)

SomersetBrie · 26/03/2026 10:33

I never heard Tesni before, I don't hate it!

Do you mean Mai as a middle name rather than two first names? I would avoid two first names in any of these combos.

I like Tesni Ffion - I also like Cariad, I know a small one but maybe it's also dated? Lots of Serens where I am (quite near to Wales).

ginasevern · 26/03/2026 10:44

Ffion Mai (Mai with the Welsh pronunication) is my favourite and, for the time being, more unusual than the rest.

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 11:33

@SomersetBrie , Cariad isn't dated but it's dreadful. It gets mispronounced as Carry-ad (the 'iad' is one syllable).

It means love/darling/sweetheart/girlfriend/boyfriend/charity depending on the context. Cariad James is 'James' girlfriend'.

VividDeer · 26/03/2026 11:35

Lived in Wales for years and never heard Tesni.
Love Mabli, but not with Mai

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 11:37

@VividDeer , Tesni. It is the Welsh word for apricity.

EllieWales · 26/03/2026 11:40

Mabli is nice but not with Mai, not keen on Tesni. I like Cadi, Mali, iola and Llio

Oh, yes, but that's not pronounced at all like Ffion. It's a nasalised single syllable, for a start!

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 11:49

@ginasevern , Ffion was very popular with Welsh speakers abut 40 years ago. There are lots of them.
Mai is very popular as a middle name for girls.
There are probably several women called Ffion Mai.

I still like it, despite it being dreadful.

HudALledrith · 26/03/2026 11:59

@SomersetBrie , I take it you don't speak Welsh. It sounds OK as a word.
I don't think it works as a name. I'd be uncomfortable calling someone it.

No it isn’t. In the French word fion the on is nasalised, you don’t pronounce an n sound.

It’s like an English girl being called Darling (Cariad) or Star (Seren). Fine, if that’s the intention, but those are words for ‘things’ rather than being names exactly.

yonem · 26/03/2026 12:00

And you don't really pronounce the 'ee' at all!

Apricity? Is that an autocorrect?

I looked up the name and seems more common in north. I'm down south (de cymru)

No I don't.
The only Cariads I know are Welsh, so it's possible your opinion is your opinion rather than actually being fact.

Not an autocorrect. It's the warmth of the sun (on your skin or on the earth or something) especially in the winter.
