Of course we'll end up with the name we love but it is helpful/interesting to see whether there's an overwhelming majority preference!

Neither - unless you're planning for him to have a career in imperial management.

How about Angus ? Still get the Gus when shortened

Julian inplace of Julius

ChikinLikin · 18/03/2026 03:32

Julian or Marcus

Holdonforsummer · 18/03/2026 03:45

Neither!

Duvetdayneeded · 18/03/2026 03:52

Niether

battairzeedurgzome · 18/03/2026 03:56

Your poll is defective. There is no option for 'please don't do that to a child'.

dnadiscoveryquery · 18/03/2026 03:57

Please don’t!

MrsTerryPratchett · 18/03/2026 04:01

Marcus Aurelius. Commit!

NobodysChildNow · 18/03/2026 04:11

Marcus Aurelius is a fabulous name @MrsTerryPratchett

GoldbergVariations · 18/03/2026 05:24

Claudius, anybody?

I always find a good test is to try saying, "Come in Claudius, your tea's ready".

Cupcakegirl13 · 18/03/2026 05:26

Neither !!

Philandbill · 18/03/2026 06:01

Julius is a great name. I know two adults called Julius. Both very confident and outgoing men.

GideonSmideon · 18/03/2026 07:53

Neither, both will be pompous twits. Augustus on the plumper side. Will grow up to be ruddy cheeked and insufferable.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 18/03/2026 07:57

Can't vote, both options should ridiculously pretentious.

PropitiousJump · 18/03/2026 07:58

Julius is a brilliant name.

Agree.

But if you must Julius.

(Mind you, names like Hector are practically mainstream now so maybe Augustus will be one day too).

domenica1 · 18/03/2026 07:59

Augustus Gloop, Augustus Gloop
The great big greedy nincompoop

agree Marcus is better!

MidnightPatrol · 18/03/2026 08:00

People are appallingly rude on here.

Every name doesn’t to be a Theo, Leo, Harry or Jack.

No one of Luke bat an eyelid at a name like this where I live. And the kids certainly wouldn’t care.

Firebird83 · 18/03/2026 08:17

Augustus makes me think of Augustus Gloop and I don’t like the nn Gus (makes me think of gust and gusset!)

Also August is getting popular so it will blend in with that.

Julius is much better!

BaronessBomburst · 18/03/2026 08:19

I prefer Augustus as there's a slightly smaller chance that people will automatically plonk Caeser on the end. A very small chance though. Not much in it.

ToastSafeFromMothsAndDogs · 18/03/2026 08:22

August is nice. Augustus is too much.

Orphlids · 18/03/2026 09:02

I like both, and would be thrilled to meet either a little Augustus, or a Julius. But I voted for Augustus, because… well, it’s just fantastic. I’d assume the parents were interesting and imaginative, and most likely the little boy would be the same.

TappyGilmore · 18/03/2026 09:19

Well August is quite popular these days so I’d probably take that into consideration. Will people mistake Augustus for August? Will Augustus want to go by August as he gets older so it will be a popular, trendy and perhaps dated name?

So … I’d probably pick Julius. But actually I like Julian better, as someone else suggested.

Do you mind sharing in what area you are? Because that’s how I feel, too - no one would hesitate or question either where we live!

Augustus, mostly because there are better nickname options (August, Gus).
Julius could be Jules I suppose which is quite nice.

MinPinSins · 18/03/2026 12:11

Julius is great! Fortunately children are lot less dick ish than most Mumsnetters - why would Julian be completely normal, but Julius a thing of ridicule? And what is wrong with sharing your name with an emperor?

I find Augustus a bit long and frilly for my liking - but do love the nickname Gus.
