(Me again! We're really struggling with this upcoming baby's name! Thanks in advance!)
What does the name Julius bring to mind? We prefer it to Julian as it's less common and feels a bit stronger to me.

You will correct people for evermore and he’ll just end up Jules anyway.

feelingsickpreggo · 17/03/2026 13:58

I think its a nice sound but, to be honest, my connotations are of a man whose quite pompous and self-satisfied (you did ask!)

Correct them in what way?

I think Julius Caesar then Caesar salad. I would not be surprised if he was ended up being nicknamed Caesar.

Is Julian common these days? I’d say Jude was common and by common I mean popular.

Chewbecca · 17/03/2026 14:04

Quite pompous and pretentious. Julian is nicer IMO.

Julian seems to be trendy and of-the-moment right now which is one reason we lean toward the more classic version.

I suspect he will end up being a Jules and people will assume his full name is Julian not Julius so likely in a work setting / school where a full name might be required he will have to always correct them . Also agree it has connotations (not sure where my unconscious bias comes from ) of being the name of someone a bit pompous and arrogant. Sorry if it were me I think I would go with Julian and accept he will be Jules to most people.

Et tu brute?

tinyspiny · 17/03/2026 14:29

I prefer Julian .

TikTokker · 17/03/2026 14:29

It’s a bit OTT for a name that will end up Jules but it doesn’t matter at all what any of us think. It’s your baby. You pick what you like and don’t give anyone’s opinion another thought.

AgentPidge · 17/03/2026 14:30

I quite like it. To me it says someone well-educated, kind and with old-fashioned manners. Polite.

Julian is a pretentious author to me. I prefer Julius.

Uppitymuppity · 17/03/2026 14:33

Depending on your age, I think of Arnold Schwarzeneggers character from the film Twins, but I'm in my 40s, I guess the younger generations won't make the connection. That aside I'm not really keen on the name but then it's not my dc so each to their own.

Blueuggboots · 17/03/2026 14:44

@SharpGoldWriter- from Julian/Julia/julie

LassiKopiano24 · 17/03/2026 14:46

I think most people will think of Julius Caesar but I do prefer it to Julian.

Tonissister · 17/03/2026 14:47

A slightly stuffy academic. (But I am very fond of slightly stuffy academics. Some of my best friends and family etc.)

ginasevern · 17/03/2026 14:48

I like it OP. It's different, strong and not American or made up! Expect him to be called Caesar from time to time but apart from that, go for it.

OsmanthusRose · 17/03/2026 14:50

I love Julian but Julius makes me think of someone like Julius Nicholson from The Thick of It

Exactly the same. Also not sure why you think Julian is trend and "of the moment"? It's pretty consistently been sitting around #300 in the popularity charts for the last 30 years, and has been in use for hundreds of years. I think they're both classic names so use the one you like best.

caringcarer · 17/03/2026 15:35

It's fine. It's what you like OP.

Ineedanewsofa · 17/03/2026 15:41

I had a brilliant guy called Julius in my team a few years ago, he was great at his job and a nice person, so positive associations for me!

FolioQuarto · 17/03/2026 15:41

The one I know has been called Jude for over 60 years. Not a pretentious guy though, quite the opposite.

This.

CoastlineAtlantic · 17/03/2026 16:52

First thought; pretentious, but then TBF, I'm not a fan of Julian , Jules, or even Jude for that matter.

RegalDiamondMonster · 17/03/2026 16:52

Julius is fine. I don't think Julian is particularly trendy, but I prefer Julius.

Courtesy of The Terrible Term of Tyke Tiler, the first thought that I had was "Julius Caesar, the Roman geezer..."
