(Me again! We're really struggling with this upcoming baby's name! Thanks in advance!)
What does the name Julius bring to mind? We prefer it to Julian as it's less common and feels a bit stronger to me.

I really don't understand how people are finding Julius effeminate when the "us" ending is for masculine second declension nouns in Latin, so inherently sounds masculine.

Handrearedmagpie · 19/03/2026 23:57

Wet, posh, pretentious, I don’t like it.

Because people who make those comments are uneducated.

There surely is no one who hasn't heard of Julius Caesar. He commanded armies and conquered numerous tribes all over the Roman empire and was an extremely successful leader, can't think of anything much more masculine than that.

If someone wanted to call their child the name I'd probably think they were fans of Ancient Rome, and there's nothing wrong with that, I am too. ( But I didn't give my children Roman names).

JMSA · 20/03/2026 03:08

I think it sounds a bit ridiculous - sorry!

Jk987 · 20/03/2026 03:17

Traitor!

Really weedy and weak, definitely not a strong name.

Yes, like that big girl’s blouse Julius Caesar Confused

Yeah, if there was a Top Machismo Award through the ages, surely the guy who crucified his kidnappers, conquered Gaul, crossed the Rubicon, won a civil war, appointed himself dictator for life, had an affair with Cleopatra, introduced a calendar named after him, is up there to win it?

Definitely would never choose a name we don't love! I do think, for us, names get points for not being seen everywhere but that's also not to discount more popular names as being anything negative. That said, we also would never choose a name simply BECAUSE it's unusual. It would be a combination of loving it + not as commonly heard! As for getting feedback here, it's just helpful to talk/think through options as I'm narrowing it down...because goodness knows my husband is tired of me talking about it over and over! 😂

Edited

But if you really and truly loved Julius, you wouldn't even think about getting feedback from a bunch of randoms on the internet! Are you sure it's really THE name?

Because we know a lot of Julias and Julies.

MauriceTheMussel · 20/03/2026 14:25

For me, Julius is wet and effeminate because JC was literally and figuratively stabbed in the back…and, more pertinently (and I appreciate this is niche), JC is Kenneth Williams to me… it’s the camp Carry on Cleo I picture in my head when I hear the name!

troutfish · 20/03/2026 14:27

Middle class older mum choice

ThatPearlkitty · 20/03/2026 14:28

i would presume a leader ?

Weeelokthen · 20/03/2026 14:32

A man wearing a crown of ivy and a toga, thats what I picture.

Sparklinggreen · 20/03/2026 15:13

I like it - Julius has a nice ring to it even though it a rare Latin name.

Arlanymor · 20/03/2026 15:15

Roman dictator... not a bad name, but arguably a bad man. And never an emperor... people make that mistake all the time like Frankenstein!

Specialneedsnightmare · 20/03/2026 15:19

I can't help but think of Kenneth Williams's Caesar!

No, not certain yet! We have a short list of four names and we go back and forth in terms of what’s on top. We plan to wait until after he’s born to make the final decision (as we did with our daughters) but it does help me personally to hear feedback and discuss!

Exactly. It doesn't sound feminine at all.
I think Julius a great name.

purpleme12 · 21/03/2026 08:23

Oooh there's a Julius in the book we're reading

Drpawpawspaw · 21/03/2026 08:28

its giving Caesar…

Because we know a lot of Julias and Julies.

Yeah but its the us ending which betokens a male name - which neither of them have. Julia has feminine a to Julius' us.

So many in this pattern. Think Augusta and Augustus, Aurelia and Aurelius, Flavia and Flavius etc.

Come to think of it OP, why not use the name Aurelius?

No, no, no … that’s even worse!

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 21/03/2026 13:26

Caesar and also dog harnesses.

I really like it!

I know a little Aurelius and it really suits him as he does have golden hair.

I think Elle Macpherson called her son that too.

Cinai2 · 21/03/2026 19:06

It does sound a bit try hard to me. I prefer Julian.
